Is there a vst that can emulate the degradation of mp3?

i mean really with quality settings. it would be great.
(also it would use 100% cpu)

i can come close with spectral plugins. any ideas?

What we really need is a hardware effect that will make any analog synthesizer sound like its software equivalent.

Really?? And do you also get the mp3 artefacts?

Kids these days, so lazy... Want a plugin for every trivial task, tsssk tsssk...

But it's possible to create a plugin for this with e.g. SynthEdit and some mp3 libraries.

...It's to early for a plug like this...First they have to make a tape emulation plug that really works...Then a bad mp3 coding plug....

Both my main hosts allow export of MP3

Id second trying some spectral effects plugs for a similar effect...
try MDSP fft tools, Kontrast in particular

I'd use this. To export a long song just to find your bitrate was too low for comfort is annoying. You could test output parameters on the fly before exporting.

Should be fairly easy to make a lame.dll vsti, but you might want to consider exactly why noone has gotten around to do it yet...
Then again Lame is not A Mp3 Encoder.

I'd like a vst that sliced my choice of bread or audio with-in ableton Live, that recorded audio and baked, and that gave me the choice of automaticly mapping slices or setting the table.

I've actually wanted something like this myself on numerous occasions. It would be a cool effect to use, doing weird stuff like sweeping the encoding bitrate from high to low, etc.

Mark my words, in the future people will speak with deadpan seriousness about the 'vintage mp3 sound' and how the superior compression formats available then are 'missing something'.

this brings up the question of which types of noise/degradation are pleasing and which aren't.

i've never really found spectral effects to really be pleasing. "neat" maybe, or interesting, but not really pleasing like phasers, chorus, delay etc.

i know, of course, that there is the element of taste involved here, but is there an objective reason why we hardly ever hear spectral type plugins as a featured element of a recording? (i realize that there are those who use them, but they are very few.)

I'd do this, too. Just think of your shoddy mp3 maker as an offline effects processor.

Although, the benefits of a plugin would be automation and in-host settings recall.

Mp3 emulator?
