this site used to do ohc, well, 2hc, and it was pretty cool:

http://www.kracfive.com/ironchef/archive.html

i used to do "driveby remixes" where i'd get a mp3 from music cafe or whatever and remake it 10x better and try to post it within an hour.

then i got a girlfriend.

i dont really have time for the ohc stuff either, i just mentioned it to a few people and i remember about ten people saying they'd be interested. same stuff, i think people are interested in doing it, it is just it never really happens since that is all people really are about it, just 'interested'. works way better on irc, since then you can find a group and say "what the hell better do you have to do?" - since they're on irc this is a completely rhetorical question.

ah on the other hand though, what about all the people you see (myself included) getting in lame flame wars here on the kvr forums? these would be people who should better spend their time doing ohcs :hihi:

Did you manage to look at the Logic incompatability issue?? I posted in the 'Purest oscillators' thread, remember?

Post

i dont have a copy of logic to test this with, and i've been doing other things. you mentioned an older version of logic (4.0 wasnt it?) and i cant get the demo for that. is it even supported anymore? apple bought "emagic" and so apple now owns logic, is that right? i havent had any related reports of problems about any other hosts, so it may be an issue with that version of logic.

it might not be something i can fix. i think you mentioned that the address of the error changes every time the error occurs. if it were a problem with xhip, most likely the error would always be exactly the same.

i'm not sure how to go about fixing this for you. i'll be creating a version of xhip which produces a detailed log in order to get the linux gui working. you'll be able to use this version to try to track down the source of your problem with logic.

ok, so i've got this from a guy called svamptroll too. the problem is definitely with logic, not with your specific configuration or system. if you're able to talk to me in realtime on irc/yahoo/msn/etc or even just send emails back and forth testing some different versions we can try debugging this.

he said:
when I put some notes in the matrix editor and playing them over and over..like play..stop..play..stop etc..
does this behaviour cause a crash for you as well? does xhip function normally in the host, then crash? or does it not load or crash immediately?

i sent him a reply email actually, this information can apply to you too if you want to help with further investigation and then testing to fix this problem.

the behaviour (sending notes, stop, sending notes, stop) crashing xhip is interesting. logic may be sending some out-of-range values in it's midi packets which xhip does not handle.

do other specific actions/behaviours cause crashes? if we're looking at corrupt midi packets as a possible cause, i'd be most interested in actions which do not involve midi. is it possible to crash xhip in logic while the midi/notes are completely disabled?

in order to debug this, we have to go back and forth discussing the problem for a while. i'll then produce a testing version (all i do is comment out some code, compile it and send it to you, this takes two minutes, no more) and you test with that to see if you can reproduce the same problems. i then reactivate some code, send that version and we continue until the problem comes back.

at that point we've isolated the section of code causing the problem, and i'll add some detailed messages to be printed out as that section of code is executed. hopefully the problem can then be recreated, and we'll have a very narrow range to look for the cause of the crashing.

so, this takes a good amount of time and effort on the part of the individual (you) testing these different versions. just tell me if you're interested in doing so.

i really need more information about what causes crashing so i know where to start, otherwise we'll have to start with an empty vst-shell and slowly add components from there. that will take much longer than if we have a good point to start from.

hm i wonder if i could do something to reduce or eliminate the clicking when resizing the reverb. it is pretty good already though. i think if i did anything else it would use a lot of cpu power while adjusting it.

you used it with purpose in this track though, awesome. i love the swimming chorus at the start too.

now if only i can sit down longer than a few minutes. what i really need i think is to get my (or another) tracker working again.

what are you using to compose by the way bg?

oh we're probably both using energyxt right? i'm really seriously considering buying xt2 but i'm waiting for it to mature a little bit more. if i can get my own tracker working good with a modular interface that i think would be better though. then again i dont know, maybe i could make a tracker sequencer plugin for xt2..

Post

well first of all, you don't have to buy xt2, if you already have the license to xt1... i think... right? hmmm. though i guess if you wanted to you could throw jorgen some extra clams. i love love love xt.

second, i really like the ripping sound on the reverb, but maybe you could add smoothing as a slider, that way you could choose how much cpu you wanted to spend.

and third of all, XHIP DISCO! PWN!!!!!2

"if you already have the license to xt1... i think... right?" no, i never bought ext either, i was saying "i'll probably buy xt2" which i probably will. i just had no idea it would take him this long. i didnt have any idea it'd take me so long with xhip either of course. nope i never really do full tracks, never save them (haha, cant load them back anyway). i have been using it quite a lot lately as a toy. i'm just not all that much of a composer so i have this really hard time getting myself to buy anything music related. i'm _really_ hoping jorgen can get xt2 working on linux without having to "work around" all the problems and that'll be the thing that pushes me over the edge to finally buy it.

there was a time not too many years ago where i would've just thrown down the cash and bought it, and ten other things (software, hardware, etc). i spent a good few 1000s then and none of that really went anywhere. god i'm happy i never let myself buy any analog gear at the extreme prices the stuff was going for, especially now with the prices sinking and very little market that would've really hurt.

the reason i still havent bought ext is because every time i try to use it, i get a little into what i'm doing then i find myself wishing this would work that way, that would work this way. then i close it up, start coding and realize "this is way too much shit to take on realistically".. then that is the end of it all.

not ext's fault, i dont think. i'm probably just extremely picky. ... and, it takes an artist. never blame your paintbrush.

hah, so without getting too philosophical, that isnt me. i'm not a composer, i dont think. i'm not an artist, i dont think. a lot of the time i have serious doubts if i'm a coder too. maybe i can finish xhip already and become one

Yes you are a coder, but definitely not a composer if you can't dig eXT. It's the simplest audio program I've ever used. You should try Reaper and get lost in all of the routing and setup stuff... OTOH, who knows? If you don't like eXT, maybe Reaper is your ball park? :D It is very powerful, very quality-wise and complex. I like it extremely much for mixing, but eXT works extremely well for composing-for me at least. This coming from a former Cubase addict for around 18 years I think, since Atari days.

actually while doing those mp3s today i realized xhip really needs to be able to automatically (in some way) populate the pcm bank. so i was thinking, maybe i should store complete path/filename for each pcm, then those can be saved in the banks/patches. during loading, if the pcm isnt found at that location a blank entry can be created in the pcm bank so that when i add the pcm editing screen, you can go through and fill in the blanks.

i've also been messing with gui stuff and i've found i should definitely just implement gsoto's gui because i really suck at this. (gui layout)

i need to get this seperate modulation depth for A/B sources thing done too, to test and see how much more cpu power it requires.

so, added that to the todo list (pcm path/filename) and i'm going to work on those three things. pcm, a/b, gsotogui.

YAY!!!! Sounds like a plan!

on the lfo section, the delay slider just delays the lfo, but is there any way to have it fade-in the lfo? i don't find lfo delay to be all that useful, but a fade-in is really nice.

is there a way to modulate output volume and cutoff frequency with the velocity at the same time? as far as i can see there's only one velocity destination, right?

it would be very nice to have multiple destinations for this things..
