yeah, it really does look great. At only $200 more than the konnekt 8 (sweetwater prices), has has an extra 4 analog ins and the TC effects. Maybe I will go for this one. I'd definetely NOT get the konnekt 24- it's about the most un-intuitive interface i've ever used, though the pre-amps are OK.
The Firebox has a very good price-quality ratio, but if you're willing to spend more, you can get better.
If you really have to get a portable solution, MOTU Traveler might be what you need, although i don't like the sound of the pre's at all. Another thing is, it is portable, but that doesn't mean it functions well in all circumstances- it's relatively sensitive to cold and hence condensation which make it go SHHHH : -)
The RME stuff is imo ok, but it's not really the pre's that are best- nice converters, very flexible in routing (although that's for the ff800 which i own) and a clean interface.
But at the end of the day, the best pre's for the price are, imo the Onyx's- in fact, i have a 800R hooked up to a fireface with ADAT, and i onlly use the fireface's pre's when i need more than 8 channels...
If you're into film recording, the timecode option in the fireface might be interesting.

Yeah i know. But i was using it at a mate's yesterday and i really didn't get along with the FX part and how the presets are used. Also, you compared the pre-amps to other stuff?
How is your Onyx for stability/drivers etc? Have you used the Onyx Satellite as well?

The onyx 400f has been stable for me, but the drivers are flawed, and Mackie has been very slow to update them. I'm on the beta driver and firmware now and haven't had trouble for a while...I had had to mess with the registry though.

I got this one yesterday and man, this interface is good. You do have to update the firmware and drivers from the site, but after that is has been flawless. It's also very portable, has inserts and can be used as a standalone (SPL)preamp. Preamps sound VERY good. Your first post said your requirements were a quiet laptop, a good stereo mic and 2 good quality preamps. Your last post said a budget of $500. At this price, you won't get anything you'll want to listen to more than a few times. It sounds like you're recording acoustic instruments in a live room (quiet laptop) stereo mic and clear preamps. What you want is a laptop with no fan and 2 drives, a Royer SF12 and a Millenia HV3, not much change from $6,000.00. You already mentioned a very good alternative - the Zoom H4 which is remarkably good - I have made orchestral 2trk insurance recordings, where I formerly used a Panasonic DAT, which are remarkably close to the multi-track main recordings. I have also recorded a string 4tet with a pair of Neumann 183s into the H4 which are lovely. It takes a 2 Gig SD card and can record at 24bit96k, but I prefer 24/48, for 2 hours worth. The H4 is silent in operation, ultra-portable and takes 2 xlr mics instead of the built-in cardioids, all for $250. If you're recording grunge/metal then get a Firebox(199) into a pawn shop dell($100) and Behringer omnis on a long mic stand ($99).
