If you have plain acoustic samples, you can give them that Duran Duran sound yourself by adding (loads of) effects, that all fatten them up:
* Short gated reverb
* Pitch shifting (3 to 5 semitones above or below)
* Compression and EQ obviously

Yes it is more a matter of fx then samples.
If you're after good accoustic samples, look for the free Yppse samples in our Sample Pool

I don't know what exactly what they used, what I do know is the snare on the TR505 sounds just like the one used on "Everything Counts". There are probably 505 samples floating around; the one I use came with an old version of FL.luxth wrote:in the vein of Depeche "People are people" or "Everything counts"?
This is a clip from my "tribute" to the track (no Dave though) done with FL 6.
EDIT: Just read LBN's post. There are TR505 samples on that site, but listening to them the snare in question is essentially the same as the Drumulator so +1 for what he said.

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

I think they made a lot of their drumsounds themselves by hitting all kinds of metal and then sampling it

The February 2007 issue of Sound On Sound has "People Are People" as the focus of their Classic Tracks article. They interview producer/engineer Gareth Jones. Despite popular belief no Einsturzende Neubaten sounds were used on "People Are People" although they provided inspiration since they were recording in the same studio. Some of the drum samples were leftovers from the Construction Time Again sessions (i.e. "Pipeline"). They don't say exactly what was used where but the Drumulator is mentioned again. Some of the sounds were sampled into the Synclavier so this also played a factor in the sound. (And, no, "People Are People" wasn't done entirely on the Synclavier as seems to be a popular myth.) One of the keys to the sound was the way the samples and synths were played back through guitar amps and speakers placed in large, natural-sounding rooms within the studio which were then mic'ed for recording. Running your drum sounds through something like Guitar Rig or Amplitube might help here. I've done this myself a few times to get some aggressive drums.

80's Extreme Drumkit
Maybe this will interest you....
The famous hard-snares that fulfilled the headroom of pop-electro hit recordings for two decades.
All the samples are recorded in an analog environment using the sounds of old drum machines like Alesis SR-16, Alesis DM5, Linndrum, Casio RZ1 and processed with individual setting through reverb units, Roland GP8, AKAI S900... Old gear and old style sounds for modern music because all samples have been cut, normalized and DENOISED.
