Hi all

In 2001 there was a series (8 x 11 minutes) on TV in the UK called "The Shape Of Things That Hum" it looked at various cult electronic instruments like the Roland TR-808/303, minimoog etc...I recently found it on an old (not very good quality) VHS tape.

Ive converted it to AVI and uploaded it to "Google Video"

so if youd like to watch it just head over to google video (http://video.google.co.uk/) and do a search for "The Shape Of Things That Hum"

*For best quality click the little arrow at bottom right of the window and select "smooth video" and "Original Size"

Watched the Fairlight episode. Entertaining so far, too bad about those two knob-like music journalists. Not a single informative/useful thing to say between them.

edit - i agree. they diss the fairlight in the akai vid, disregarding the ten year history the fairlight had on S1000's release.

i watched the fairlight one, i think knob-like is far to kind to them. kittenkillers.

Great stuff, even if it's just listening to how slanted the "experts" are.

Like in the vocoder episode where the completely fail to break out of the "vocoder processes the human voice" mentality. Or to mention that vocoders are actually sophisticated active filter banks.

Using them strictly for vocals is totally stupid. It would be like only using distortion, chorus, compression and wah-wah pedals on guitars when they are perfectly effective on synths and any other instrument.

I built a PAIA vocoder back in the late 1980s. One of the first things I used it for was to run a guitar through it instead of a voice. I modulated it with an Ensoniq EPS running a sequence. You can't tell it's a vocoder being used because there's no voice involved. Instead it sounds like the most incredible filter effect you've ever heard: complex, shifting, metallic, ever changing.

But all these people can think to do with it is run a voice through it

firefox with downloadhelper, gets a .flv. nice sound, poor quality picture (but who really uses their optical spectrum).

also - that Les Rhythms Digi-tales guy knows nothing (watch vocoder prog)

also in the vocoder one, the kittenkiller jounalists laugh at 1970's idea of the future.

they said that in 1970 people thought in the future people would have jetpacks and wristwatch tv's....

is this the future? because both exist now...
