I watched DX7, 808, Akai, vocoder and Minimoog tonight while waiting for my wife to get home from night school. Nice dance through the past. Reminded me of how much I hate Yamaha music gear that has a CPU in it!!

I hated the DX keyboards and their TX counterparts.

I got swept off my feet by the sounds of the Motif and curse the day I bought it. I seriously think that the people that design the user interfaces and write the manuals are from a different planet.

Must resist urge to ever buy Yamaha again!

Thanks for posting this series by the way.

Why don't we see stuff like this on TV in the US?

Well, we do have Ramsey Lewis and the Masters of Jazz playing right now on public TV - excellent.

Yeah I've had these for a while. Interestingly, the DnB producer's (Ray) studio was in my building on the same floor as my old office - most evenings the building was being shaken apart by the bass frequencies from his stuff...

Yeah, Yamaha's interfaces have always been spectacularly bad - things like the TX16W, the RX5, and indeed most of the black boxes with "X" in the model number were pretty awfully designed. Good value for money, mostly well-featured, but a pig to use.

I had a love/hate affair with the DX stuff. I never liked how they sounded, but they were still desirable to me (hey, in those days I had a CZ101 and that was about the limit of what I could afford!

So who's up for starting a Rock School thread..?

Yamaha did do a cheap version of it....the portasound PSS680 which I got for nealy nothing cause you can't give them away. I do remember there was whole stack of them at the music store and nobody was very happy whith them at all.....mmmm... In the end I wound up whith 2, cause I came across another for even less, but it did come whith a stand which was quite handy. There was another one earlier I did not get, which was more moog in appearance whith side pieces of wood and knobs instead of the plastic black plastic buttons of the new...the older one might have been more preferrable cause it was about the same price as the others................mmmmmmm..

Hey, I had two episodes of that on VHS tape at one time that my sisters taped over with some sappy re-enactment of the Charles & Diana wedding! I couldn't believe it - I was furious.

Are those up on YouTube as well?

The only one I could find is . Oh how they loved their Graham Bonnet on Rock School. Next, no doubt, they talked to Midge Ure.

I used to have series 1 and 2 of Rock School on VHS, not sure what happened to them, either fell apart or got taped over.

Don't think so, but I have all of series 2 knocking around (the best series with Alistair Gavin added to the guitar/bass/drum line up of Deirde, Henry and Geoff).

My fave segments include Omar Hakim on groove, Vince Clark on sequencing (it's really bad), Bill Bruford on Simmons drums and.. well, actually, loads of interesting stuff...

No way! I can still hear that silly little tune he comes up with in my head. Actually, what I remember most is hearing the keys as he enters the notes, without hearing the sounds as he played them. Always thought that was funny.

That five minute segment had a big influence on me back in the day. Changed the way I approached sequencing (on my Atari ST, and the crappy thing built in to the cheap Yamaha keyboard I had).

With the quality of that video it's hard for me to tell for sure - but I seem to remember it being a CZ-1000. It can't be a CZ-101 because they didn't have full-sized keys.
