Stefan:

I'm definitely still getting the CPU ramping stuff even with this latest version. I will post about it on the REAPER forum as it appears to be some sort of interaction specific to the combination of: REAPER + SM_Comp + My DAW. :(

I'll let you know if anyone figures out what the hell is happening?

Thanks again for this excellent plug!

Before you blame any host dev, have you tested it in other hosts as well? If it's my fault I don't want you to go hassle someone else :)

Version 024 of the dual-band compressor/expander released (on the 11th).

Main features:
  • Dual band with adjustable cross-over frequency and mix of the two bands.
    Adjustable look-ahead.
    Ratio from 1:1 to 1:inf.
Attack and release times from 0.1ms to 10 seconds.
    Threshold from 0 to -50dB.
    Adjustable stereo linking.
Adjustable Auto Gain, can compensate for sustain and/or peaks during attack phase.
Adjustable amount of soft clipping applied, adjustable clipping curve.
VCA (feed-forward) and Opto (feedback) style compression.
Both up and down compression and expansion.
Option to force the low band to mono.
Adjustable Dry/Wet mix for "New York compression".
DLL Here

BTW, watch your ears when changing Compress/Expand and Down/Up modes. If you're using a high Ratio setting you might end up with very loud settings.

Let us know of any issues!

Cheers!

Yeah. After my initial post, I tried SM_Comp again on the machine with the CPU ramping problem; this time running in Samplitude 9. I only got 5% CPU! So, I'm guessing it is a conflict between REAPER, SM_Comp & my PC. I'm really leaning toward REAPER as my mix platform, so I'm hoping this can be resolved somehow. If there is any other info about my PC that may helpful, please let me know?

I tried it in Reaper and no problems whatsoever. EQ had same problems in EXT and Reaper, too. So no, It's not Reaper :D.

Thanks for the heads up! :)

Stefan, this thing is shaping up to be a real beauty! Any chance for a version with external sidechain input? Or was this available as a synthmaker file? Then I could probably add it myself. :D

Cheers!

Ok, in an attempt to keep up by just reading, I'm lost. What is the latest version of each of these? Can you put the download links for all of them? Or is there only one plug now? I only ask because I remember seeing three.

I could just be going crazy!

Thanks for the freebies!

Expect both I'd say. I've started working on "internal sidechain filters", adding external sidechain should be a breeze. Schematic will come, uhm, when it's done :)

The ones on the first page are always kept up to date, so you'll find the latest versions of both the EQ and the compressor there.

However, three? :)

Post

Excellent. I'll just check there each time.

As for "three", it appears that I confused the Synthmaker component on the front page as another effect. My bad!

But these look good, so thank you for these!

Awesome news. For some funny experiments, try sticking a kind of expander/gate in the sidechain. You can make the compressor do some really weird stuff this way.

You mean that I should try adding such a feature for the "internal sidechain" (I don't like the term internal sidechain, but what else should I call it? :)). It does indeed sound like it could be interesting. I might have to fork this plugin into several projects soon... I've also been pondering about a multi-stage compressor (parallel/serial compression).

The little tests I've done so far with filtering of the detection signal has made me think that fiddling a lot with the sidechain kindof renders the dual-band functionality unnecessary, because each time I've ended up setting it to just working with one band (cross-over at 10Hz).

Adding weird stuff to the 'internal' sidechain is fun. I mean, it IS the sidechain information together with the "detector" that creates the compressors main characteristic. Yes, I meant, mess around with gates/expanders (gate is maby too rough but expander should do fine) in the internal sidechain. This way you can control the way it reacts to transients versus sustained information. Also, doing the audio into multiply -> multiply -> multiply (aka peak/transient enhancer) and using that in the sidechain can be quite fun.

Then another idea, the opposite of look ahead, umm, "look too late" (:hihi:), a variable slight delay in the sidechain, can create all kinds of funny results. Also, anything that destroys the transients (like splitting the signal, applying a gate, that separates only the transients, into one stream and then phase reversing this and combining it with the other stream) can be quite interesting.

There are so many things to mess around with to make compressors more like effects instead of boring tools.

Cheers!
