I need some horns. I don't want to do complicated brass arrangements, or sax solos, or anything like that. I just want a variety nice sustained horn sounds that I can layer to get cool harmonies and dubby drones. Short Staccato sounds would be nice too. I'm not interested in orchestral stuff. Definitely more jazzy sounding horns are required, and the drier the better, but there is not one particular sound that I'm after. I just realized that good brass samples is one thing that my studio really lacks, and I've always wanted to use some. Any suggestions form people that actually have used sampled brass and have had experience with some of the available libraries?

I already have sampletank2 XL and although it's nice for some things it's brass section is NOT satisfactory.

this is too bad. i got the quantum leap brass akai for like $20 i think on soundsonline. cant remember the sale price. well it seems they're sold out now

It really depends on what you want to pay.

Liquid instruments is cool but it's not a traditional VI with single notes with different articulations. It's got a ton of loops and phrases that are editable through melodyne's technoligy, allowing you to change note lengths and the pitches of different notes in the phrase.

Other pop/jazz horn libraries include:
Big Fish Audio's: First Call Horns
Garritan's: Jazz & Big Band Brass
Chris Hein's Horns
and a huge library by Sonivox: Broadway (really expensive over $2000)

personally I've got garritan's and First Call. garritan's the cheapest at 259 and First call is 299. Chris Hein I think is 400. They are not the ultimate collection for this type of library but they are good. I espeacially use first call's trumpet sections a lot. They have a number of mutes included with a lot of articulations in that section. Garritan's library also includes other aspects of "big band" like guitars and upright. I like the first call horns section better though. So you should check out the web sites and listen to the demo's though to make your decision.

Well I checked out the demos of the stuff recommended. Garritan's and EWQL's library's were very cool but they contained a lot of stuff I don't need. Out of Chris Hein's Horns and First Call, I liked the sounds on First Call the most, and it's the cheaper of the two, so I went ahead and ordered it. I also checked out the Greg Adams Brass loops while I was on the Big Fish site and loved that too, so I also ordered that. I'm not normally a loop guy, but the Greg adams stuff seemed so useful that I couldn't resist. Now I can't wait for them to get here! Thanks for everyone's help.

I've heard mostly good things about Project Sam True Strike brass. I use EWQLSO XP myself, but I've got my eye on the PRoject Sam stuff, too.

What I've read about SAM gave me the impression that it was more Orchestral oriented stuff.

I can read perfectly well. The truth is, there are only a handful of high-end brass libraries out there. And just because the ones I mentioned say orchestral on the tin doesn't mean that's all they're good for. I've used EWQLSO for jazzy/big band style arrangements plenty of times and they sound pretty good in a mix with drums, acoustic bass, etc.

And where are the "more jazzy sounding horns" in EWQLSO or Project SAM that afreshcupofjoe was after?

Where are the scoops, falls, doits, shakes, growls or flutters?

It's just a suggestion. I don't think it a particularly inappropriate suggestion if said library can achieve *some* of the types of sounds he's looking for.

Why does that make you so angry?

I agree you could prob do some "jazzy stuff" with EWQLSO, but you could probably also create a wood carving with a crowbar!

What is the harm in having the guy take a listen? Have you never used a sound in a composition that was different in genre than the target market for the sound? If you haven't, you need a shot of creativity serum.

Sometime, you just look for "that sound". It really doesn't matter what library it is in. It just works. I see nothing wrong in suggesting orchestral sounds. They might just be what he wants. HIS ears will tell. It was only a suggestion.
