I actually wrote a rather long post about my current feelings with eXT1 and XT2, but I want to think a bit before posting. I do share quite a lot of spritex's thoughts.

All I can say right now that I am demoing Podium, and also seriously considering those SX3 bargains popping up like mushrooms.

You should have posted the long version, .jon . It would be much more interesting than the usual "get yourself Logic" if you don't have a Mac - posts, or stuff like that without more explaining WHICH midi-functions are missing to make such "you follow me crapdunk!!"-statements .

That said, learning about sequencers is always nice. Concerning EXT2 the problem AND the good thing is that the developer listens to all suggestions from the userbase. Of course this isn't without disadvantages. Let aside those "it's not expensive, so it must be shit"-people who flood this world, there are musicians of course who want a stable, feature-blowing sequencer. For those the EXT2 beta is nothing now.

I think part of the original question was: Meloday the wise man has EXT and Bidule, wants a comparison to Podium and is looking for a not too expensive host that has as many features he needs (sequencer-wise) as possible.
What about Tracktion? Reaper? Or WHAT is missing for you in EnergyXT1.4-sequencer (and are the various midi-workarounds the powerusers could readily explain in the forum not enough?) Stuff like FL Studio or Orion or Sonar or P5 and what else?

Personally I switch from Orion Platinum to EnergyXT (main host) to Tracktion (again, after some time), always using EnergyXT inside of the other hosts.
I must test Podium, so am interested too in real information here. And it's the first time I hear about SX3-bargains, as I have to avoid looking at group buys and bargains .

I have a lot of hopes for eXT2. It has a lot of potential. But at the moment, that's all. It's going to be a long process, I think, and I'm happy to try it out and beta test it as much as possible, but for actual music production, Sonar is as close to perfection (for me) as I've found so far. Perhaps XT2 will overtake it for some things (I vastly prefer XT's curve-control envelopes over Sonar's limited Fast/Slow curve envelopes, the ability to adjust the Dry/Wet of inserts etc.) but until then there's nothing I can't seem to do in Sonar.

I'm very happily using Podium at the moment (got the CM version), but the larger a project seems to get, the more confused I seem to get. I'll put that down to pilot error. However, every so often I get a breakthrough when using it and really enjoy working in Podium. The bezier automation is without doubt the finest I've come across.

Once again, it's an old cliché, but noone here can really tell you with 100% accuracy which is better. Just demo demo demo demo demo demo demo until you're blue in the face and the tears are streaming down your eyes (with either tears of joy or dispair).

I think you are right, and diamond studded spoons are something nice . Still you must be a wise man, hybrids AND diamond spoons .

OK, back to topic. Just trying Podium now, and I think EXT2 will be good if it will be ready later this year.

Might have been, but I have reassessed my situation and come to the conclusion that there simply are no reasons to waste time demoing software and wondering about future developments. Nothing is stopping me from making music with the software I have (eXT1.4 and Reaper) and enjoying the process. Every host is a compromise in a way or another, flipflopping does not pay in the end, you'll just have different missing features and annoying details.

I have decided that my music hobby is not about obsessing over minor program features.

It is probably too early to form an opinion on XT2, I don't expect it to be fully finished before end of the year. I'll upgrade if it's better than eXT1. Reaper gets better every day, I can't even guess what it does by the end of the year and frankly don't care, it'll be great anyway

Really understand this, .jon. In my case it's nearly the same, except that from time to time (playing all the time with EnergyXT and nearly nothing else) I like to use another one just to find out if this and that is better for me.
But then I have Orion, or Tracktion2, quite right. Reaper is something I missed.
Just as CM gives me a version of Podium, I think I'll look into it, and I never really looked at Audiomulch, Reaper, Usine before, all of which seem to have an interesting concept.

Guess in my case it is another thing too: that I started as a REAL "know-nothing" 1-2 years before I started reading KVR. Nobody to help, as nobody around was interested in electronic music-making. I know pretty many things now, but there is always the chance I missed something right from the start. Or sometimes I just think so, and after trying out another good host from a fair developer I'm stunned that "x" is so easy .

Most of the time I was pretty happy just to change a skin in EnergyXT1, though

well, at the end of the day, it's you who will be using whatever you want - so try both of them and use the one that fits how you do things...

I think they are both superbly innovative seqs, I personally use Podium ALOT, but have the demo of eXT for VST testing and quite like it, but not enuff to switch.. however, the devs for both are super people..

It's up to you!

I actually think Podium has a bright future. I'm mainly a FL user, but I use Podium on my work computer and a little bit at home and I think it's really got a lot of potential. For some, it's already filled their needs, for other it needs some more development, but so far it's coming along nicely and constantly addressing useability concerns.

I don't have a horse in this race (I use Logic on a Mac) but will give my .02 anyway...

I tried Podium on my PC laptop, and was impressed. If the developer continues refining it, Podium will be a real contender (i.e. professional) in a year or so. I liked the gui, and workflow. Being a "young" app it lacks many features, but it is stable and already very useable. I am thinking about getting it to "play with" on my laptop when I'm not at home....

Anyway... +1 for Podium
