hi guys!
i created a wusikstation preset + soundset and would like to share it. it consists of 94 Drumsamples from my Roland XP 30, and the size of the soundset is 11.4 mb. i created a rar file which includes both the preset and the soundset file and uploaded it to rapidshare. the link is:
http://rapidshare.com/files/16726826/Ro ... n.rar.html
have fun!
edit: sorry guys, link deleted, if it turns out that ben_horwood is wrong, i'll post them again.

Distributing samples from a sampled based HW synth are a good way to end up in court, and possibly jail.
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

are you sure? i sampled the output and did not extract anything from the hardware itself. anyway, i'll delete the link, you scared me...
can anyone shed some light on this?

Yep. Eric Persing (head of Spectrasonics, and one of the Roland XP sound designers coincidently), has stated this numerous times in this and other forums.

Actually, a BIG company, which I can't say the name of, states that sampling the XP series is not the problem. What could put you into problems is using the names Roland and XP.

If Roland did actually discover that their samples were being used, you could still be in trouble. It probably wouldn't go any further than a 'cease and desist' order but nonetheless....

a while back someone on the yahoo SE group traded some emails with a roland lawyer about this sort of thing. the word he got back was that roland is against the re-sampling of the their samples. they were also against the use of the name roland to market other products, or the use of any roland designed visuals, which in addition to logos also includes the look of any of their hardware.
what it would take for them to go after you is a different matter, and that i have no idea about. but supposedly their official stance, at least as of that email, was that they were against anyone using anything of theirs. (for commercial or freeware purposes.)

thanks for sharing. there is a guy at analog momentum that sampled the entire line of drums in the XP synths to SF2. www.analogmomentum.com or something like.abi wrote:hi guys!

use extreme sample converter to convert sf2->wusiksnd.
i've got an xp-60 myself, so i already have these sounds but it's a nice effort. thanks.

Totally ... and with absolute zero tolerance.ugo wrote:a while back someone on the yahoo SE group traded some emails with a roland lawyer about this sort of thing. the word he got back was that roland is against the re-sampling of the their samples. they were also against the use of the name roland to market other products, or the use of any roland designed visuals, which in addition to logos also includes the look of any of their hardware.

They have a whole team of legal people who scour the net looking for potential infringements. Also, staff frequent the forums, etc., and will report infringements to their employers at HQ.
And when an infringement is found, the lawyers will pounce and bring their might to bear and it would be a brave individual who stood up to it .... because they will lose!
Other manufacturers operate similarly.

I hate to sound unsophisticated, but what is the difference between this and, say, the use of all the hard and soft synths used to make Atmosphere? I'm not trying to be a jerk. I genuinely don't get the difference.
If every KVR member wrote one review a year we'd have 1340 reviews each day!

This has come up several times in other threads. For one thing, there's a difference between sampling sample-based and non sample-based synths. Analog synths don't contain any recordings so there's no copyright to infringe on which means they're OK to sample.Hewitt Huntwork wrote:I hate to sound unsophisticated, but what is the difference between this and, say, the use of all the hard and soft synths used to make Atmosphere? For Atmosphere, Eric Persing also sampled some sample-based synths but in those cases he was either the copyright holder (being the main sound designer for Roland) or he obtained a licence to use the samples.

1. It is not illegal to resample any analog gear.
2. It is not illegal to resample any sample-based HW that you might own.
3. It IS illegal to sample any sample-based HW that you own and then either sell or redistribute those samples.
This is regardless of whether those samples have been processed, resynthesized whatever.
In the case of Atmosphere all samples that were used were either done with the HW manufacturers consent or Spectrasonics owned the original rights to the samples (which they had licensed to Roland).
