And fwiw, from a functional point of view, this is working exactly like a slightly twisted version of what you find in both "Sunny" and "Just The Two Of Us".
In "Sunny" it's Amin-Gmin(7)-C7-Fmaj7-Bmin7/b5-E7, the Fmajj7 and Bbmin7/b5 being a fine replacement for the Dmin and the C7 used as a secondary dominant to lead us to the Fmaj7 (instead of A7 leading us back to Dmin).
In "Just The Two Of Us" it's Fmaj7 - E7 - Amin7 at first, the Fmaj7 simply working as some (absolutely common) Dmin replacement. Then it proceeds with Gmin7 - C7, a II-V for the Fmaj7, again a very common replacement for a IV-V (Gmin - A7) movement, which would lead to the parallel minor chord.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Well, this might not be the obvious choice with Jazz, but if it were classical I'd do one of two things (assuming you mean G major to F major):

1) A simple transition from I in G (G,B,D), to V7 in F (C,E,G,Bb). Make sure the B-Bb occurs in the same part, and keep both Gs in the same part. This is an example of 'abrupt modulation'. Eg:

2) The other option would be for the Tonic Chromatic Seventh (I with flattened seventh) in G to become the Supertonic Chromatic Seventh (ii with sharpened 3rd and minor 7th) of F. Eg:

See my Introduction to modulation and/or my Introduction to Chromatic Harmony for more details.

I've been reading a bunch of Bach Chorales; Bach. LONG before Jazz, Romanticism, and even classical harmonic function. And that man STILL does things with harmony and modulations I can't get my head around.

Music is an AMAZING thing, anyone else notice?

Yeah, some of the chords get kind of repetitive or sound out of order, but I like the jazzmidi.mid best.

thanks for the replies. its going to take me some time to understand what some of you have written (sascha). im lame at theory currently, but this will help so much.

heres one more jazz midi.

also included is a simplified and revised 'major midi' that should make more sense. Ive included the trumpet line which actually prepares the modulation with C-F (perfect cadence), also the Gsus4 is now a Csus2 enhancing the V-I modulation. although i still feel the Gsus4 works, could it not be thought of as Csus2/G bass? however i cant really get the C7 to work for me, although i appreciate it works, just makes the change to F feel too 'nice' each way i try it.

regards,
