Isn't end of march a bit too soon? Or is it just me thinking that since I haven't managed to update my last entry yet? That could be it...

BTW, anyone had any thoughts on if a theme of any sort would be cool this year? Like, uhm, we all make a "delay based" effect, or a bass synth, or a FSU effect, or drum synth or whatever? Leprechaun theme?

Or just the same as last year :) Fully open so to speak.

I like the idea of a 'theme' - perhaps there could be a few themes and each dev choose which theme they'd like to develop for?!

No themes - fully open. I want to see more innovative stuff like that Pondular one - a theme will constrain that.

It's just that that I'm not sure of. If, for instance, we'd all make "delay based" effects and instruments, I think we'd get some very interesting entries. But I'm in no way opposed to having an open competition, I think last years was great with lots of good entries.

tbh I'm happy either way, but to encourage the widest innovation a wide open comp might be best.

Having said that a theme has always worked well with the music comps, and has focissed the mind and required folk to be inventive; so it may not be a bad thing - however, there are 12 monthly music comps in a year (otw), so it kinda needs the theme to keep up interest and momentum. The DC is less regular, and so may benefit from the open ended specs..

I'll probably still make what I had in mind either way, just bend it to fit whatever is decided!!

I'm not convinced that a theme like 'FSU' or 'delay based' would be that great - the variety of entries last year was part of the interest. There's a risk that if you stuck a theme on the workings of the entries you'd end up with quite a lot that were redundant slightly inferior versions of an idea that someone did better elsewhere. Whereas last year pretty much every entry had some sort of niche, which was quite cool.

A theme for the GUIs might be cool, though - it might push people's creativity in interesting directions, and it'd also give the entries some sort of group identity. IMO 30 odd fruit or history or science fiction or animal based entries would be more fun than 30 odd delay based entries.
It's a rave, Lewis!

I rather have an open, but mostly I'd like one themed and one openen.

I'm not a dev, but I just want to say +1 for no theme. 8)
If every KVR member wrote one review a year we'd have 1340 reviews each day!

BTW is this thread appropriate for feature suggestions ?

When I first read the heading for this topic, I thought it was about a conference, as in hotels and name badges and a sales room in DC in March. Which doesn't sound like a terrible idea.

Would people attend this? Presentations and slide shows, about both current research in sound design\synthesis from academic researches\developers, and presentations from dealers about new products?

Much more limited than NAMM: only VST or VSTI hosts or programs. Which would be a big field. Everyone from Tascam to indy developers. Would let everyone see everything. Or does everyone prefer this site and links as a kind of habitual, virtual conference?

Or is someone already doing this?

+1 for open, let innovation run free without boundaries

this thread is appropriate for any kind of suggestions related to the challenge. :) plugin ideas, structure of the challenge, you name it.

by the way, i'm leaning towards an open ended competition. let our devs do what the do best. ;)
