One bend wasn't going as badass as I wanted, so on inspiration from the MySpace 'Circuit Bending' group, I decided to tear open a telephone.

Hopefully I can make some shitty vocoding crap!

Right, I'm gonna post on the myspace forums as well, but thought that i would ask here first

Just had a go a bending a '91 model super speak n spell. My first bend as well. You can do some stuff to it, contrary to every web page i have looked at (google bring up about 5 hits all told for "super speak and spell circuit bent")

got some disortion, a very garbled signal, and some nasty white(?) noise out of it. very cool.

However, it likes to reset itself after some of these, er, bends (is that the correct terminology?)

So, is there a way of jumping the circuit or amp or fuse or whatever, so that i can start the thing and play with all the buttons and my switches without it resetting itself all the time??

Are you doing any sort of resistance tests in your bending adventures?

If you're not, then get yourself a Decade Box or build your own, like I did. :)

Ah, no :?

Will google for that. Ghazla's book mentions it, as do a couple of sites.

problem is, i cannot detach the circuit board from the unit, and i only have the back on display, so i dunno what is what :(

so, by bypassing the fuse or whatever it is, that would work??

do the eyes glow when it meets a resistance??

Entirely? Easiest to point you to Cementimental...

The buttons call up SFX and the cue of random music bits while the knob is a huge and strange pitch thing. It's in his hands so if you wanna hear it, bug him to record it!

mines not exactly bending,so tell me to f-off if ye like.
i put apair of mini-headphones and an old telephone earpiece into a magic mic(spring reverb toy) and added some resistors to limit the output.(a tip from someone)i'm not experienced with electronics,(can just knock audio leads together etc)so i was looking for a simple and small circuit to make the thing distort a bit.it's not picking up the reverb as good as i expected which is just bad positioning i guess.so just wondered if there is something a could do,pref without using batteries or just a little cell if i have to.
any simple tips will be much appreciated.(i do have a few mixed bags of caps, res etc) :)

an info for a newb: are those kind of rotary switches ok for building a testbox with various potentiometers?

if all your pots 'share' a common then yes (+ the price is right)
I take it you want to build a resister substitution box?

yeah, that's what I thought about the remaining "1 pole", but wasn't sure, thanx.

and yes, it's my first resister substitution box, it's time to refine the probing process.
thanx for the answer.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you're playing with those, too? I bought about 8 of them from Target when I found them on sale for $1.99. what I did with the one that I'm working on is glue it to the speaker one of an old computer speaker. the amp on the computer speaker provides enough ass to get the springs vibrating properly. I just haven't sussed out how I'm going to mic the output. contact mics are out because they aren't subtle enough to pick up all the vibrations. I'm thinking of glueing another speaker to the other end and wiring that up to an output jack. my other option is to get a small electret mic and install that inside the cup. once I suss it out I'll be posting some details notes on the project. if I remember I'll come back here and post a link to that.
