For anyone wanting the sound and feel of the real thing, I recommend you check out the SE5a kit at
www.ampmaker.com/index.asp
It's a point to point handwired 5watt Class A valve amp ( top quality parts ), you could build it within a week, the instructions and customer support are second to none. I hadn't soldered for twenty years and managed to build mine sucessfully. It sounds fantastic, very responsive to your playing, can go from a sweet clean sound to raunch( ) overdrive, and at £130 it's probably cheaper than the equivalent sample sets, plus you don't have to switch the computer on to hear it. I've used various input methods ( Aura Pro, VAmp2, Bad Monkey ) and while some of the sound of a valve amp came through, the feel and responsiveness was lacking- I just didn't know it.

I've only ordered parts from him to fix other people's amps and can agree on the great service. But those kits look very nicely thought out and I am tempted to sell off some crap on fleaBay and get the £s to buy one.
Steve.
I know I have got a negative edge, that’s why I sharpen all the others a lot.

That looks good.

There's also the AX84and it's many spin-offs and derivatives. A co-operative project begun by kvr's own Chris Hurley

Now with improved MIDI jitter!

As it happens, I went looking on AX84.com when I first decided I wanted to build a valve amp, and was kindly directed to Ampmaker by one of the members, so Chris is indirectly responsible for helping me out as well 8)

Anyone know how to mod these simple amps to include FX loop?. Taking the preamp output out to FX and accepting the FX out as a line in to the power section is probably the way to go but what additional circuitry/components are needed to do it properly?

I don't know, but if you email Barry at Ampmaker he will probably know, and be able to supply the parts.
