It seems to be relatively "new" and actively maintained. I've never tried it, and it seems to have a steeper learning curve than BIAB (never tried that one either), but it looks promising and it's free!

Hey, guys! I'm the one who runs musicmachines.net. I'm very sorry for any trouble you've been having with the program. (I'm also sorry that I haven't updated the site in four freakin' years, but I have come out with, like, seven albums and been able to make my living as an indie musician.
) If you have any questions about how it works, I'll try to help. In specific so far:
silenthill2006 -- you can enter a lot more chords. All you have to do is click on the Section window (to make sure it's active), then UNcheck "Automatic Chord Selection" from the Options menu. Now, when you enter a chord, you'll have a whole bunch more possibilities.
chardin -- regarding sectional key changes in BIAB, the only way to do it right now is to select the bars you want to change the key of, then pick "Transpose > Transpose From... To..." in the Edit menu. That will give you dropdown choices. Pick the current key for the "From" and the one you want it to be for the "To".
Davros UK -- sorry about the way the install is set up. I am neither a hacker nor a cracker; the installation is copied from the original disks, which do not have copy protection. It is, in fact, a legal retail copy, which I got from Microsoft some years ago (the whole story is on the site). It is pretty much abandonware; the technology has gone through several revisions, which you can find in DirectMusic Producer for DirectX if you really want (although I don't recommend it, as it's a royal pain in the ass to work with). What audio device are you trying to get it to recognize?

No problem. It's still a good and worthy program, twelve years after its release.Man, thanks. Not only for your help, but just posting the thing on the web.
A thing: Right now, I've got that domain on a free DotEasy account. I have to move it to my new and better server space, but I haven't yet, and apparently you all are coming close to exceeding my monthly bandwidth.

Tom, i cannot install the program. Tried it from harddisk, then from floppy. After 33% it asks me to insert Disk1, despite Disk1 is already in the drive (and it doesn't want Disk2 either). I have no idea what to do. Am i SOL?
If i get angry enough, i will delete it, and will have to buy BIAB.

I sure do hope you're not SOL. Please forgive my asking this, I don't mean to be insulting, but... what EXACTLY did you do on the installation? Because I really did try to set it up so that you just had to download the two .zip files, unzip 'em, run the Setup.exe in the first folder, and then halfway through tell the installer the rest of the files are in the second folder.

I tried exactly like in your install-tutorial (i'm a computer geek, i know this stuff
) It just asks me for Disk1 instead of Disk2 (but it doesn't take either of them). Well, never mind, likely they are some particularities with my system here. At least i tried.

Argh. I'm really sorry, man. Running XP?
... wait a minute. Did you rename the folders, or the disks, to anything? The installation program, finicky 1995 vintage that it is, is looking for a disk or a folder called SUPERJAM2-1 and another disk or folder called SUPERJAM2-2. If they are not called that, the program won't install. (Toldja I wasn't a hacker.)

That's a shame that you can't get it to install. I don't understand why it was so hard for you install. You just had to go into the unzipped folder for the second disk and select the "SUPERJAM2-2" folder. It should work. I just did it. Don't go buying BIAB yet, even though I do own it and still use it. Please try it again.jjensson33 wrote:I did not rename any folders. XP here. Anyway, forget about it, i don't have the time for this.

OK, i caught the error. The folders need to be on the desktop AND/OR you need to clear the "archive" attribute. Yesterday i tried to install from a new folder on my desktop (...desktop\sjam\superjam2-1) and directly from c:\ to no avail. Now i'm gonna try it
Thanks for the help

SuperJAM is...uh...Super!! Thanks for making it available, filkertom! I like how it can easily produce actual jam backing tracks that have room for a soloist rather than the dense muzak, one fingered Casio sounding stuff most of these things produce. I can't wait to get into the custom band thing (the jazz bassist is great, also got my eye on the fuzak keyboard player, etc).
I'm not too up on MIDI so I thought maybe someone could enlighten me. I'm trying to use sfz with the Roland Sound Canvas (Tuned)GM sf2 set as a GM module just to get started with this, but when I export the MIDI file from SuperJam and drop it into my host (eXT) and then send all the parts to sfz w/the Roland sound set everything seems to work fine except the drum part always come out as an aweful piano part - even if I manually change the MIDI channel in eXT. Also, when I try to hook up to sfz from SuperJAM using MIDI Yoke everything seems to just get run through whatever patch is called up.
Any MIDI help would be appreciated!!

Whew. Not sure I can help you, guitarzan. In the case of the Soundfont, that's something which maybe the online documentation for sfz -- or that Soundfont -- can clear up.
In the case of the SJam w/MIDI Yoke, I really don't know how compatible the two are. Remember that SJam came out twelve years ago. The fact that you're getting any response amazes me.
Something that might help: Make sure that, in the SJam MIDI set-up, the "Keep MIDI/sound resources" box is checked. This will allow SJam to use MIDI even if another program is open and active. And see if there's something similar in sfz or eXT (it might say something like "close MIDI ports when not in use", which you would want to UNcheck). A lot of programs hog all the MIDI to themselves as a default, and don't play nice with other software.

In a GM context drums should be sent to midi channel 10. However I recall that some implementations (Roland?) expect drums to be sent to channel number 16. So that's something you can try: either channel 10 or 16 for drums.
Is this a stand-alone version of SFZ you've yoked to SJam? Maybe it doesn't interpret the channel numbers correctly, or it's in "omni" mode so it's not multi-timbral. Try running it in a simple VST host lik MiniHost or SaviHost...
