After having different monitors and spending more and more money in buying budget ones, I finally did it and got myself the Focal Solo 6 BE a couple of weeks ago. I can recommend everyone to wait a little longer, save money a little longer and buy good speakers that you can rely on. Your work process and quality will be a lot better. To me the Focal is the right thing. I Compared them to Adam, Genelec, Tanoy, Emes, KRK etc. and , as far as my comparison goes, the Focal is a lot more reliable in what you hear is what you get...

i'm searching and re-searching monitors reviews over the net and about the options i got here the krk rp6 is the one getting better reviews from users....
im still afraid on getting the correct monitor for my needs, i do metal/rock/eletronic mixes and i think a good bass response would be better. when i read someone saying the krk rp6 is fatiguing i can't understand why since the most of them says it's flat and accurate.
the others options i got are:
samson resolv 65a
samson rubicon 5a/6a
m-audio bx5a/bx8a
and of course the krk rp6
for my needs, do i need a sub to complement the bass response?

I've just read a review about the samson rubicon. It was compared to very much more expensive speakers like the Adam P11, Focal, Genelec etc. They wrote that it's not exactly an equal league but they stated it to be very good for the money.
I heard good things of the krk as well...
Keep away from the m-audio bx5 (no good bass response, the speakers too small). I had them and they are not bad sounding for composing purpose but nothing you can create good mixes with...
I don't know anything about the samson resolv...
Another speaker I heard very good things of are the EMES monitors. Maybe you should check them out

Another vote for Event TR5s here. Not fatiguing at all, great stereo separation and detail. The TR series seems to have been replaced with the ALPs now, and supposedly they're even better. So my thumbs up goes to Event. Shame they don't do a basic sub to go with these near-fields.

This following chart is sort of my way of organizing my thoughts. I created this chart to help me get an overview of affordable monitors out there. What do you think of it? http://www.mooma.info/misc/temp/monitorivertailu.gif (prices are not up to date)
Afterwards I got Alesis M1 Active Mk IIs and I'm very happy with them. Only the power led on one of them died but apart from that it's all happyhappyjoyjoy for me! :)

Reposting a post in the appropriate thread.
In summary, anyone using:
- used audiophile speakers (Paradigm, B&W, Axiom) as monitors
- old JBL/Urei/Tannoy monitors from the 70s'80's?
----
I've been wasting brain bandwidth researching speakers on the net recently, so I'd thought I'd start a chin-wag here among bargain hunters.
I'd like a second set of monitors that are a step up from my yorkville ysm-1's, though I am very happy with these - so my desire is driven by curiosity as well as a requirement for a second quality reference to double check stuff on.
I'm getting the impression the home audio market (esp used) may actually offer some real bargains. Also, old 70's and 80's monitors by JBL etc.
I don't monitor loudly and would like good bass extension, thus power handling/efficiency and abuse resistance are less of a concern than in some studios. I'm looking for passive as well. I just don;t believe in powered speakers....its all fun and games till amp goes bad then you have a speaker you can;t use and a repair bill - pita. Just my opinion.
Axiom, Paradigm, B&W and NHT seem to make models which would be good or excellent studio monitors (in terms of accuracy, detail etc).... and their older versions are available quite cheaply on ebay often. a/d/s are a company who supposedly have made some very good and accurate speakers.
Anyone here with any recommendations?
Also, old Urei or JBL's from the 70's/80's.... these were standards in studios, and I'm sure many of my favourite records were mixed on them.... so why not just pick up a pair for 400-600 as they seem to go for on ebay?
Anyone here take that route? Hows it been?
Certainly, buying a new pair of JBL passives with similar specs would cost a hell of a lot more nowadays (12 inch driver, flat to 40hz or so).
I know they may not always be suitable for nearfield low volume monitoring though.
Something definitely appeals about vintage gear, and the 70's seemed to be a pinnacle in terms of well engineered, quality analogue audio technology.
Manufacturers constantly have to come up with new designs to sell speakers to the same people all over again: logic suggests there were some perfectly excellent designs from the past 30 years.

Look at these
http://www.audioheritage.org/html/profi ... 430-35.htm
Now THOSE are loudspeakers
When I live in a house again, they would become more practical.
http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl ... ei-809.htm
More suitable for a small studio - they sell for ~600 used.
On the hi-fi front, glowing review of some axoims here, complete with measurements:
http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/axio ... 22tise.htm
not ruler flat, though I suspect many monitors sold at the moment are not either. Few companies seem to publish measurement specs (JBL being an exception)... I wonder why?
