I am using Awave Studio 9.1 to edit the GM.DLS bank (yeah, i know, just about zero DLS banks exist...unless somebody has some)Awave Studio is a great program, i mean, it recognizes just about every sound format out around. However, it's hard to edit banks because there's NO keyboard or much visual interface in the program. I've used DirectMusic Producer, it has a much better GUI for editing sound, but it sucks 'cause you can't import/export anything except .dlp files, which Awave Studio can handle.

Does anybody know of a program like Awave Studio, only with a more thorough, detailed GUI for editing sound banks? I need something that displays a keyboard, and can assign regions via the keyboard (like DirectMusic Producer, or Vienna Soundfont Studio) Actually, Vienna has a very natural, intuitive interface, too bad it doesn't read DLS files.

Thanks.

I thought DirectMusic was dead & rotten already. Didn't know anyone was still aware of its existence.

Why not just create a soundfont in Vienna and then convert to DLS with Awave?

Since you already have both!
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

Extreme Sample Converter does have a keyboard, it's nice, too. The program supports all the major sample formats, but i can't, for the life of me, figure out how to assign the samples' regions with this program. As for making a soundfont in Vienna, and converting it to DLS; I think Windows XP or whatever controls GM.DLS does NOT support the DLS-2 format, AFAIK.

So, if i convert a quality SF2 with, filtering & velocity layers, they will be lost. I recall in Windows 98, i saved a SF2 in DLS-2 format as GM.DLS with Awave, and the result was NO output from the MS GS wavetable synth. On top of that, I tried to convert a GM soundfont bank before and Awave said the DLS format only supports a max. of 2200 regions, and that if i saved the SF2 as DLS, i would lose many its regions, not to mention the samples that make up those regions.

I was also looking for some DLS files and aside from the WinXP GM.DLS,all I could find was 1 single file - the terrible SoundMAX DLS GM soundset.
LOL

BTW,what happened to DLS2?

Actually, the info given above is not correct. ESC translates, but up until the present it doesn't allow any editing. Having said that, I am pretty sure it is planned for one of the upcoming 3.x releases.

Where, by any chance, can i get the "terrible SoundMAX DLS GM soundset." I mean, it can't be worse than GM.DLS. Which version of ESC 3.x, specifically, allows editing Samples' regions? Or is it NOT available yet?

Good question, partially answered on http://forms.analog.com/Form_Pages/soun ... rtFAQ.html :
SoundMAX FAQ wrote:1 Where can I get driver software for my SoundMAX Digital Audio System?

SoundMAX is a computer "sound card" which has been built directly into the motherboard of the computer. It uses the computer's main processor rather than a separate processor on a separate sound card. This is often called "onboard audio" or "integrated audio."

SoundMAX does not provide drivers or software directly to computer users. To download drivers, you need to contact your computer maker (or motherboard maker if your computer was built from parts).

33 Why doesn't my MIDI port work?

Musicians sometimes use the MIDI port connector on some computers to connect to an external musical instrument. SoundMAX does not support the MIDI port of computers.

In many cases, because the MIDI synthesizer runs on the computer's main processor, there can be a short delay between when a MIDI instrument (that is connected to the computer) plays a note and when that note plays out the speakers.

On some computers, SoundMAX includes a MIDI synthesizer (which simulates musical instruments) which can play MIDI files. Some games and web pages create audio sounds using the MIDI synthesizer.

I went hunting because I thought there used to be some DLS banks available on the Turtle Beach Site,
didn't find them but I found this in the FAQ

DLS Editor - Is there one?

These software tools can be used for creating or converting DLS Level 1 banks:

AWAVE
-----
A great conversion tool that allows you the flexibility to convert almost
any known sound bank format over to DLS. It also has advanced tools that
rival many patch editors. Be sure to use version 5.0 or higher.

AUDIO COMPOSITOR
----------------
Combines a MIDI file renderer and software wavetable synthesizer, integrated
with a rich graphical environment for editing instrument samples and patches.
Be sure to use version 3.2f or higher.

DIRECTMUSIC PRODUCER
--------------------
The Microsoft authoring tool for composers and sound designers who create
content for DirectX audio.

MILES SOUND SYSTEM
------------------
A powerful developer tool that completely handles all aspects of sound,
including the manipulation of DLS banks.
