Hi All

Don't know if this is the right forum, as this is more of an alternate controller. I use it myself to control VST's using Steem.

Moderators, feel free to move it.

After years of contact with Laurie Speigel, she has agreed to a
downloadable shareware version of (Atari) Music Mouse. This means, you can
download Atari Music Mouse, try it, and if you like it, register it
for $15.00 on her site.

More info here:

http://tamw.atari-users.net/mmouse.htm

BTW: I am still waiting for the PDF manual from her, but I have enough
info on my page to get you started.

Also, Music mouse works GREAT on a PC running the Atari emulator called Steem! It is well worth the time to set up Steem. CM did an article on how to set it up as well. You can also run most of the apps on my Atari site on it. See sig.

Probably the best 40KB you will ever download! :-)

Anybody heard of Music Mouse?

That's great news, Tim! This is reason enough for anyone to get Steem up and running. I remember reading about (and lusting after) this app back in the 80s, but didn't have a computer to run it on.

Thanks...glad you have heard of this. One of my fav tricks is to use one axis only, put the BPM up to 200 or so, and use the pentatonic scale, and just let it rip up and down, while doing pitch bends at prestigious moments. You can sound like Jan Hammer wailing away!!

It sounds kinda like this:

awesome - thank you again for turning me onto steem, tim - it's just mind-boggling what one can still do with the atari midi software in today's vst environments - add to that a few midi controllers, some freebies and low-cost fx and you've got more universes to explore than your lifetime may offer...

Just tried it, and its working. Must be all these Kvrers going at it at once ! :-)

BTW: if you download it, and install steem and use it, please support Laurie Spiegel by registering it.She needs all the income she can get, even tho it is small.

I think you said it all right there!

hmmm , i'm a bit confused .. i went to the site and saw a trial d/load for mac only, it says to send for a hardcopy for atari which i presume can run on the steem emulator thingo.
Does the mac version run in steem too? on my p.c??

Post

Yeah..its somewhat confusing.

Basically you can go to my Music Mouse page, scroll down, and actually download it from there for use in Steem ( but you have to set up steem on the PC , or a REal Atari) Then if you like it, you just go to Laurie's site and register the Atari version for $15.00. However, if you want the original discs and hardcopy manual, you can pay a bit more and get that.

so basically..its the honor /shareware system.

Does that make sense?? :-)

yes.. thanks! :)

Hi Tim... I'm finally getting around to downloading Steem so I can try out Music Mouse- I used to own the Mac copy way back in my Mac+ days.

I looked at some of your FAQs, but I may have missed one important bit... how do I get the realtime MIDI being generated by Music Mouse out of Steem and into Hubis Loopback or MIDI Yolk? Does Steem let you specify the PC MIDI ports to interface with?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

yeah, it's pretty straightforward - you can simply select any virtual or real midi out. so i just select midiyoke7 (as an example) and activate that in my vst host and i'm ready to jam. :D
unless i totally misunderstood the question.... :hihi:

Tim, sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but ever since I saw STeem for the first time, I salivated over the idea of going back to KCS (IMHO, the best MIDI sequencer ever, bar none, with features that so many years later nobody has come close to emulating) but... in every computer that I have tried, the CPU usage meter shoots to 100%, and, consequently, timing sucks big time, so much as to be unusable. Is there any secret to getting it to run properly?

Post

Thanks for the info, Tim. I have been visiting your Atari site from time to time and there are a lot of very cool and inspiring applications over there. I like the algorithmic stuff. And STeem is so nice. I still have my old Atari, but I have not turned it on for years. Still waiting for a solution to be able to run Notator in STeem though. That would be terrific.
