By the way, since we have hollowsun here, I was wondering -- there are a few places to get "classic synth" samples, like those off of modarchive and hyperreal. Somewhere, I heard that these were originally freely available from hollowsun, and then withdrawn as hollowsun went into different formats and commercial release of the samples.

I have no idea if this is actually true, but I was curious. If so, are those old samples still OK to use without restriction?

Hollowsun has always been a great contributor to the web for years, I think the "Neutron Bomb" Tron disk is a great value, too. But there are orchestral freebies out there from which to build on. Here's an example:

Cheers! :)

sorry, this post was put in at the end of the thread. Looks dumb. I don't know the answer to your question, either V

It is true that I made a lot of stuff freely available for over four years at a time when I could afford to do that. But circumstances changed and I could no longer afford the colossal bandwidth costs to accommodate over 30,000 hefty downloads every month so I reluctantly withdrew them. They later went on to become the foundation for Zero-G's 'Nostalgia' plug-in and many sound library updates for the Alesis Fusion in licencing deals.

If you have those samples from the time they were free, it is ok to use them yourself in your tunes, etc., but you are not at liberty to re-distribute them for free or otherwise. Some harmless 'passing on' to a mate is ok (in my books) but posting them here or at that pirate's paradise, shitfaces2midi.com, is most definitely not just as a matter of principle. Just because they were free once does not mean they can be re-distributed for free in their original format or any other converted format now and I and/or the licence holders will take steps to have them withdrawn (and we usually succeed!).

Thanks for the info -- I don't want to do anything wrong, that's all. When I started into the electronic music thing just a few years back, I downloaded a bunch of samples from a few places off the web that sounded pretty good to me. I don't really know where they originally came from, and I seem to remember someone mentioning that they might have been archived from when you gave them away.

I'm just a hobbyist and I certainly don't sell any samples. In fact, I recently started buying a few sample cds just so I know I'm using stuff that's ok.

The material on your website sounds great. Currently, I'm mostly using trackers and basic 16 bit (or sometimes lower) wav samples, and free VSTis. One of these days, I'll get one of the big time hosts. The Nostalgia demos sound absolutely fantastic.

I know it takes a lot of hard work to put these things together. (By the way, I've never taken anything from sf2midi.com.)

Why don't you use EnergyXT right now!?
