Here ya go, about 50 seconds long:
Strat and J
I just a minute ago ripped this thing out in one take. Standard J-Station setting on the Blackface model. Into Reaper. Antress Modern Amplifier and Modern Analoger in the chain to bring it up a bit, with a touch of Wizoo W5 Large Studio verb on it.
No editing or other processing of any kind before the render, other than trimming the beginning and end.
Not that I'm a great player, but I loooove this tone.

you used to be able to get the j station for cheap on eBay, the prices have doubled over the years. Same goes for the Digitech Talker

See the problem with guitar tone is that there are so many subjective words used to describe it, that its literally impossible to say what is what.
Someone in here said Rammstein sound fizzy.. but personally, I find their tones be quite warm. It's just a case of testing things out for yourself.
I'm quite happy with my PodXTL. I just wish it had a wider range of effects that were actually useful.
The envelope modulation in GR2 is very useful as are the other effects. My Pod doesn't quite cut it.

Dammit, I want that J Station now!
Amberience, I think Dux and I were referring the very top end of the sound. For sure Rammstein has big bottom end. How could you not, with a name like that?

Wonderful thread guys, keep filling the info and I'll keep filling the glass
"crunch away"!
I don't like Rammstein's sound too much, it's too clean for my taste, powerful, but somehow doesn't give me the creeps [good creeps that is], although I like the songs, nothing spectacular but some are really "it". My ballpark when it comes to creeps and sound is Ministry, Motorhead and [brace yourself] AC/DC [older stuff from 70's and 80's]!
I feel like when my dad used to talk about Paul Anka, Beatles, Elvis... arrrgggh
Cheers!

Yeah, I love getting into the guitar stuff, it's a nice change, although I'm a sucker for the synth stuff...the drum stuff, everything, really.
AC/DC is just the shit when it comes to tone - nothing old fogey about it! (uh...I saw them in '89...). I actually don't listen to Rammstein at all, so I can't comment; just going from memory. I was a huge fan of Ministry back in the day, they have that very precise tone that was big at the end of the 80's. Perfect for them.
Like you - but oppositely - my tastes have changed a little bit and I listen to less aggresive music lately, but I love to bust it out now and again. I'm trying to think...best tone ever...The Cult's "Electric" is pretty awesome for the AC/DC type thing; by the time they got to Sonic Temple, it was getting fizzy (5150?). Oh, and Ty Tabor from King's X. Man, what a sound! That's probably my single favourite tone right there: driven, but clear as a bell.
Grey Lion, that clip is a very nice clean sound! (The mp3 was clipping like a mofo, unfortunately) Is the chorus from the J Station too?
In the spirit of sharing, and to maybe convince a couple POD naysayers, here's something I'm working on right now.

Good work, GreyLion! Some digital clipping, though-- as long as it's not on the analog-to-digital or in the amp model phase, easily taken care of with more time spent on the staging.
Can't remember if I gave my perspective... don't want to read the first pages... I really like Line 6. Some claim that they're "aging" but I think it's partially psychosemetic. Just like Johnson with the J-Station, they hit the right formula and I think it still holds up.
BUT... I've got a new soft spot in my heart for Revalver MkII. Contrary to some people's claims, it's not really ONLY a high-gain thang. In fact, I don't really use it for high gain at all and love its clean sounds.
As for SRV--> His tone was significantly more complicated and he actually enjoyed mucking around. He even cascaded his amps from time to time. And it wasn't a Fuzz he used but rather (and famously!) an Ibanez Tube Screamer. I can't say that I find this particularly convincing, because I could've sworn he used Crybabies, too (and therefore it would make the whole setup questionable) but here's what Guitar Geek thinks of his setup:

It's not Eric Johnson or a Bradshaw system, but it certainly has more to it than a cable and an amp.

I was wondering when you'd join us, Greg!
Yeah, I don't quite buy that SRV setup they have there. The Wikipedia article sounds a lot closer to what I remember.
OMG: I shudder to think of what Eric Johnson's setup is like...

Hmph. I just streamed the MP3, and you guys are right, it's all poppy and clicky. But the .wav is perfectly clear and clean when I play it in Reaper. Looks like a render problem.
..Just re-rendered and pulled the Kjaerhus Master Limiter off the mster fader. Had forgotten that it was there. Not that it's a big deal or worth re-listening to, but here's the clean version:
Strat and J Second Render
Hmmmm.... Interesting -- When I play either file by double-clicking and bringing up the Quicktime plug-in in FireFox, both files are nasty and clippy. But if I save them first and then play them in WMF or Media Monkey, they sound fine. WTF? Is this just me, or are my ears going weird? Something to do with streaming versus having the file on your hard disk? Or do you guys just have a lot better speakers than I do? It shouldn't be clipping; I was running it pretty hot, but it came into Reaper on SPDIF, which should have prevented clipping there, and never got over 0.3 dB on playback and render at the master out.
bduffy - I don't think there's any chorus on that patch. Maybe a little reverb from the J-Station, plus a slight delay, then the W5 reverb, gives you that impression.

No chorus? Maybe my speakers aren't that great!
I think your mp3 was a conversion thing, although it's suspiciously happening on peaks. Sounds exactly like when I'm playing through an amp sim in Cantabile and it's too hot, or it reminds me of too-hot audio in Flash. Are you exporting mp3 direct from Reaper or converted the wave after?

Thanks for the feedback on this thing, though I feel bad about getting so OT here. I just hate it when this sort of glitch crops up on something so simple, though. I just finished metering the entire signal path and I don't catch any clips anywhere in it.
I was rendering to MP3 straight out of Reaper, which uses the generic LAME encoder, at 192. Which I don't think I've ever done before, come to think of it...Good sugggestion!
Now I gotta render to .wav and see if it makes a difference to render to MP3 in one of my other editors.
This stuff is endless, isn't it?

Endless and so so much fun.
OT: bduffy, The Cult was one of my best bands ever
. "rain", "wild flower", "she sells sancturies" to mention just the popular ones. Great great band. Still like them a lot. My interest in music is quite broad and if you ever come to my place, you simply can't enjoy the silence here, except if it's Depeche Mode's
.
Cheers!
p.s. one of the most interesting threads in a while.

Sorry, a little teenage resurgence there.
