Is there a concensus on what is the best low cost commercial (in the ballpark of $30) grand piano soundfont ? I need to run it on mid-range laptop with 768MB of memory so I need something <500MB. Tried many smaller free fonts but found them lacking.

I can't help you for soundfonts, but I believe SampleTank 2 Free has a decent downloadable piano. The cost is right! If you decide you like the SampleTank interface, then get the Expansion Tank: Piano Collection for $39 (or less if you mention dougsyo in your order). The Premium C7 Grand that comes with it is 156MB + the ST2 player.

Make sure to check out Warren Trachtman's soundfonts. His freebie works quite well for a distant piano font; meaning it doesn't have a kind of ridiculous pan (low notes on the left, high notes on the right) as heard basically only by the piano player him/herself. He also has some bigger fonts for sale on his site.

Also google the Splendid soundfont. That's a huge multi-part download, but this one is really wide.

Have tried Splendid 72M and 136M versions and Equinox. Splendid 72M has a very annoying switch around C2# between number of layers. 136M version does not have that problem but both 72M and 136M have very sharp transitions between layers, easily heard in normal playing. It is indeed extremely wide, I generally prefer it wide (for live practice) but not that much. It also leaves the impression of being sampled extremely close to hammers as the FFF layer is supernaturally bright.
Equinox OTOH is well balanced font with no oddities like Splendid. I do however wish it was a bigger font (it is only 96M for 2 instruments). Likely due to size advantage 136M Splendid PPP and MF layers do sound richer than Equinox.
I'd probably use Equinox for now but I keep on looking. Extrapolating what I've heard so far a cleanly designed font of few hundred megs should satisfy my needs.
