How to Extract Kurzweil samples? (Not convert)

Hi,

I have about 35 Kurzweil CDS in really bad shape, all scratched up from when the previous owner
gave them to me, (His k2600 was severely scratched up also lol)

Any way, I see the Kurzweil utilities to extract to .KRZ files (kcdread) appears to work,.

However I would like to use Awave or ESC to simply mount the CD and simply extract and not re arrange.

Can Awave extract and not alter the original sample?

Post

Extract to what? To .wav?

http://kurzfiler.sourceforge.net/

(I don't have/know Awave.)

Post

I want to extract to .KRZ from the crappy AKAI like images.

thanks, installing the software now. (its nice but cant read a kurz CD)

You can do this easily with Translator Free as well, Mac and PC.

That must have been on a very old version.

It's clearly stated on their site that Translator 6Free do NOT do any conversion.

To be fair, that post was from 9 years ago.

No, the latest version doesn't do that anymore.

Both wrong. (C'mon, if you are giving information, don't guess. It just clogs up the Internet with false information. How did you think it got that way?)

As stated, then AND now, Translator Free DOES extract KRZ files from proprietary Kurzweil CD (or disk or image) and writes those KRZ files to computer-formatted hard disk. That isn't a "translation", it's just moving a file, and it's what we offer within Translator Free.

Well, you could have been nicer, so I'll say this: No, we're not "wrong". Your website does state that Translator 6 does not do conversion. That's the point @sfd made, and that's the same point I agreed with him on. It is NOT what the OP was asking about, or what you responded to 9 years ago.

But it is the point @sfd made, and the point I corroborated. (I could add something snarky about "trying to understand what people are saying before replying", but I won't. Don't want to fill up the Interwebs with useless "information".)

I'll add this: I do appreciate you responding quickly to a thread about converting and/or extracting samples (and no, I'm not being sarcastic). I think it's great when developers and manufacturers try to help out on KVR and other forums.

And while the original question might have been posted 9 1/2 years ago, Chicken Systems Translator is still a valid and useful product, and other Kurzweil owners (myself included) would do well to keep it in mind if we need to convert or extract our samples to other formats.

Just because someone (in this case me) corrects you doesn't mean they're rude. Just take the correction and move on.

I did not say it was wrong to say "Translator Free does not do conversions", what I said was wrong was the the conclusion that since TF doesn't do conversions, it won't extract KRZ files from a proprietary CD, which IS what the OP (midiguitar, read above) was directly asking. TF DOES extract the files, because such an operation is not a conversion, it simply moves the object off the proprietary CD (since it knows how to read it) and slaps it on the computer-readable HDD.

TF fully moves files of any proprietary format, whether Akai, Roland, Emu, Ensoniq, Kurzweil, etc. It also format disks for those formats. But it doesn't do CONVERSIONS, which means you can't take (say) a SoundFont and write it to a Ensoniq disk, because you are converting the SoundFont into Ensoniq Instrument format. That's what you get in the commercial version of Translator.

We've asked KVR to PLEASE lock threads that are over 2 years old, we feel that's completely common sense. Technology being what it is, it is SO EASY for old threads to contain out-of-date information, which winds up being just as inaccurate as real inaccurate information. We've bugged them many times about this, to no avail, they refuse to. It's bad enough that Google/etc. has to find the threads - posting to them is even worse. All KVR has to do is lock the thread and if someone tries to post to it, throw up an error that recommends them to create a new thread. Other forums have done that for decades. What's the problem, KVR???

You didn't "correct" me, since I didn't mis-state anything. (For the record, neither did the person who revived this thread.) And since you said "both wrong", it's fairly obvious you were referring to the last two people to comment on this thread. The OP may have mis-stated something, but that was 9 1/2 years ago; please take the correction and move on.

I also didn't say you were "rude". I merely expressed regret in the tone you chose when "correcting" us...even though we weren't incorrect in the first place.

I agree with you that KVR should somehow alert people that threads are years old, but in many cases, new KVR visitors may have useful information to add to old threads. It wouldn't have helped in this case, but other, old software is still being used on many systems, and creating "duplicate" threads wouldn't necessarily solve the problem. There's still a lot of useful information in older threads. But yes, a pop-up box alerting users that they're about to post in a thread that's over a year old may help avoid some
problems.

EDIT: And to be fair, I did say something nice about your company after "correcting" your "mis-correction". I don't have a dog in this fight, so there's really no need to continue this. I have no problem with Chicken Systems, Translator, the OP or the person who revived this thread after 9 1/2 years. (He was probably mistaken when he revived it, and I'm pretty sure he regrets it by now, anyway.)

To anyone reading this, now and 9 years later, and beyond:

Translator Free 6, in 2016, does extract KRZ files - all Kurzweil objects - off proprietary Kurzweil CD's and onto regular computer HDD. I've confirmed this firsthand.

Can we have a first hand confirmation that it's clearly stated on the website that TF do not do any conversion. :-)

good to know that you, too, have concluded that I wasn't "wrong" - after all. :-)
