1) WHAT'S NEW?
Format Change: Instruments, Multis, Banks saved in this version are not compatible to previous versions of Kontakt.
License Server compatibility
Script knob automation: you can now automate script knobs just like any other knobs in Kontakt! Just drag and drop an automation ID from the browser's Automation tab onto a knob in your script. You can use a mximum of 16 automation IDs per script.
You can now send data from MIDI input and scripts to the MIDI output. Please check out the extended settings under "Send MIDI to outside world" in the Options dialog, Audio Engine tab.
New option on Load/Import tab: "Always re-write samples as WAV when Saving". This option allows to save every sample in WAV format e.g. when a patch was created from a REX file. When you save as a monolith, samples will always be converted to WAV. Please ignore the older option below: "Destination Sample Format".
New import formats: ASR-X and Emax II
Several important bugs have been fixed

Midi out might be cool - potential there for Kontakt to function as a complex Karmalike midi sequencer using scripting.

There seems to be a few of the new features missing from the above list, like:
Save/Load Group in Group Editor: Now possible to save & load individual groups "useful for quickly creating instrument layers and stacks from individual groups".
A Group is saved with along with all Sources, Group Insert FX and Amp module settings.
New factory library of pre-made Groups.
Import Group can be used to load Batteryy 3 cells into an instrument.
New AHD mode in AHDSR section. This functionality ignores the length of the incoming note "for example this is useful for drum sounds if you wish to shape the triggered sample regardless of the length of the incoming note".
Sliced Loop enhancements: You can now drag sliced loops directly onto the mapping editor of another instrument, automatically creating a new group in beat machine mode.
Multiple Loop Import: Drag multiple loop (shift/command-click for non-adjacent loops) directly from the browser to the rack/instrument creating a new instrument with each loop played back by one group in Beat Machine mode.
Sliced Loop tempo display field added to browser: You can now see or sort loops in the browser by tempo.
Surround output channels named in host mixer: ("currently only applies to hosts supporting this feature - Cubase and Nuendo").
Now displays the correct channel names in the channel output configuration window instead of generic output names.
Various new KSP commands.
Three new modulation sources: Constant, Random Unipolar (0 to 127), Random Bipolar (-127 to 127).
New import formats: Battery 3 kits, Battery 3 cells, DR-008 kits, Pulsar sts-5000, RGC:Audio SFZ.
New Help menu in standalone mode.
Now possible to load Instruments, Banks, and Multis by double-clicking in Finder/Explorer.
Source Tune now supports +/- 36 Semitones.
.nov files now hidden.
128 voice groups instead of 64.
Adjust Loop start for multiple zones in Loop Editor.
"many problems with importing other sample formats have been solved".
"Various bug fixes".

Thanks for the more complete list of changes, but isn't that mostly the 2.2.0 update? The feature list for this reads like it was composed by someone who is not particularly fond of NI. Really, breaking backwards compatibility is a improvement? Just so I can find out if converting REX files and "Various bug fixes" improve my performance? Sounds like a dubious trade-off at best.

Still a great improvement (2.2) over the previous, but yes - including newer functionality that breaks backwards compatibility is always very bad news - especially if there is no 'Save as older-version-compatible' option...

...can anyone tell me how Rex-files with muted slices and/or slices with silence are played in v2.21 (had to sent my music computer away for repairs for three weeks, so I can't test it myself)?

...no, it's just because Kontakt 2 plays Rex-files with muted slices wrong, i.e. the loops are played as if the respective part was cut out and therefor the loop would "jump". This also applies to loops that contain silence in one slice, e.g. snare loops with no audio data on the first beat. I'm using this mute function a lot and I have some E-Lab/Equipped Music libraries that contain a lot of these snare loops that's why I'm interested. Actually, I'm using Rex-files most of the time and it drives me mad that this file format isn't supported properly after several updates and almost two years...
