QM Synthesis

How to make that sound...

Post

Hey, guys.

Something like an year ago I've been working with simple things in Reaktor with quantization (and resampling via sample&hold), and I found a quite interesting usage way it's side-effects for FM synthesis programming.

Also last year I set up my blog for the things I build in Reaktor, and just posted an article about my *invention* with more or less detailed description, sound examples and sonogram plots. I've built Reaktor 5 ensemble Quantum Radio which is based on the side-effect usage as FM modulator. Actually, the quantization (resampling) side-effects can be used as any other modulator (for AM modulation for example), but it turned out to be much more interesting to use it for FM. I called it "QM synthesis" within the post, but basically because it's short of "Quantized Modulator". So, please keep in mind I didn't do any *invention* claims.

Read the article, and tell what do you think of it?

I had no time and enough of experience to build a standalone version of the Quantum Radio. But I believe it's quite simple to build something similar under SynthMaker or just C++.

sounds interesting, is the ensemble available too?
ill have a read over this now though

yes, of course, there're 128 files mp3 snapshots, 15 min tweak session mp3 recording and the ens file

cool thanks 8)

It seems some of you might not really understood what I've written in the post/article. Another reason for no replies could be the fact I really do not have any talent to start/handle a thread in KVR forum :)

In case you don't have Reaktor 5 and don't want to read my stuff, you can listen to the ensemble tweak session, i.e. real time recording of the synth tweaking.

P.S. I've been reading the sub-forum for awhile and actually, now I feel like I came for feedback to a wrong place. Just like it ain't "sound design", but something like "presets design". So, feel free to point me out that there is no sense in posting experiment results in the future, though it's obvious..

Post

I think it's a great sound, really great for IDM, Industrial, Noise, etc.
The only problem seems like it may be difficult to create melodies or anything like that with it.
But great for effects, backdrops, etc. I'll be sure to remember this if i decide to get Reaktor. :)
Thanks!

Post

I think this should be over in the DSP & Plug-In development forum.

gimme chance its a big read, am enjoying tweaking the ensemble so far though, my kind of noisemaker :)

mistertoast, the thread should be atleast in 3 subforums, I selected this one, if people get intereted they could continue wherever they like. The reason I selected this one is that *technology* allows to create a lot of sounds within minutes. It's just another tool for sound creating, another approach when you have a couple of faders and don't know what exactly you'll get in the end. Just like you seed a couple of numbers and get a new sound, with no randomizers and lfo.

lateralus778, the thing is not just Reaktor. Of course, it's done in Reaktor right now. But it's simple enough to be done in hardware with a couple of microcontrollers I believe.

It certainly is interesting... And the fact that you somehow found such symmetry in the visualization is wild. I would myself unimpressed with the sonic results though - it sounds like most early-80s 'arcade-ish' sound effects. Not that that is a bad thing, just probably not useful to my own sound design.

Thanks for posting and good luck with it!

Post

Well, I'd say the pseudo-sequencing sounds *arcade-ish*, but you can get quite different sounds, some of them are quite complex. But the thing is there are 3 oscillators with no Fx-processing (in this QR ensemble realization). And basically, Quantum Radio (1.0) is an example synth for the *QM synthesis*. And actually, I can make a sample CD per day with the *new* sounds. The Quantum Radio sound design process is extremely fast and unusual to regular software/hardware synths. Well, I did my best with the posting, I hope some of you will get interested, because there are more and more things to research, and it's something more than just a tweaking of another classic_synth. If it was something boring I wouldn't use the separate name *QM Synthesis*. I hope you'll get me right.

Thanks for the good luck, Jeremy! I managed to open my site and save some of my ideas, that's quite a luck to me already.

you're a deluded wanker

Post

Sorry, Zedah, KVR is not particularly receptive to nuanced communication.
I quite like what I've heard and am even more intrigued by the idea behind it.
Hopefully vurt will get excited enough about it that I'll hear/hear about the results.

Post

hmm... It's been a couple of months since last post in the thread, I'm quite surprised about any attention on it. I didn't really count on some big or proper feedback for my idea at KVR. I think it was my first and last announce here. Though I put the idea back to a shelf it would be nice to read any additional comments about the qm synthesis.
you're a deluded wanker
The funny thing is that the comment shows that I probably ran into something really serious..

look in all fairness i did try your example synth AND i read your blog. it's cool, you're right, and you're justified in feeling a little excited; however, all you have actually done is clumsily glued together two already very well established ideas - INTERFERENCE and FREQUENCY MODULATION

thats why i called you deluded.

i called you a wanker because it seems like you've been writing with one hand on your cock. that's okay in itself, i jerk off a lot too, but it's better to do it ones own privacy, don't you think?
