for the life of me i cant make good break beats, ive tried to emulate my favorite artists, grayarea, hybrid, way out west, ozgur and v sag but cant get it down, if anyone can give me some pointers or somwhere where i can get a good break library i would much appreciate it...the programming and structure is also new to me as it differs from most other traditional drum patterns.

this might look like i'm oversimplifying but i'm not. breakbeats are hiphop beats/samples played at a much faster tempo. Learn how to program some dope hiphop beats and then speed them up, create alot of variations, apply effects to taste and you'll be better than well off.

also take your favorite breaks and slow them down and listen to them that way.

traditionally, break beats were lifted from the "breaks" in a song; for instance a 2 bar section before a chorus, etc. It was and still is a pop music structure device, but what makes break beats different is just that: they are 'drum breaks'. These breaks were like a "mini solo" for the drummer- so there was bound to be a deviation from the moreless strict 2,4 back beat combinations... and now that breakbeats have become an actual type of music- the key to them IMHO is unpredictablility coupled with a sometimes "inferred" groove... I dunno. now I think I'm starting to sound like blather. better stop now and go to bed. Still...I'm thinking my fav break beats do something unexpected and they're intrinsically not boring even when they do repeat themselves. The later can be the hardest part

here are a few of my not so secret weapons:
Bridgetown Breaks (unbelieveable stuff to work from. chop it up and reassemble to you heart's content. you WILL have original sounding stuff. Promise.)
Breakbeat Cafe (now $7.99... a ton of stuff, a good bit you may have, but this package is worth it to have them all sized up and ready to go)
just picked this one up, but love it!:
Endangered Rhythms, Volume 5: Drums of the Sixties great stuff and as with the other suggestions above: NOT expensive. these are all incredible values.
