Pluck bass / fast short bass

Hi i've been trying to make basssounds for electronic music but often i end up with basslines which are to long and makes my mix muddy.Though when i layer the attack i can make it appear shorter and "stronger" .
In a lot of modern music the bass kick and snare really fade out fast ,it's like they cut out the end of every
sample.How is this achieved ? in a sample editor or do they use sidechaingate for this purpouse, a compressor or do people make the sample sample fade out smooth initself so there is no reason for further editing ?
