@Hanglow,
GFS, you mean Guitar Fetish pups?

Have you considered Swineshead pups? www.swinesheadpickups.co.uk Hand wound in the UK, I've just put a set of Condors finished in Zebrano wood on my 'budget' 12 string electric. They sound great and are superb value for money.

There's also Bulldog pups http://www.bulldogpickups.com/ Again hand made in the UK, a but I've no idea how they sound/compare to the Swinesheads.

Some of the guitars in the GFS clearance section look amazing value.

That Harley Benton amp looks mighty interesting at the price, I hadn't seen it before.

@GaryG,
It's not just the J&D's great looks (it's a J&D guitar, I got told off for calling it a RMS when I posted a review elsewhere :hihi: ) it's managed to convince me of something I never thought could happen. Prior to getting it, I'd never found a guitar where a mix of single coils and humbuckers worked for me, but they do on this guitar. I don't have to switch guitars to change tones now. The stock pups are only cheapo bog standard jobbies, but they are plenty hot enough and have a nice bright character. Throw in the fact the action is now unbelievably low, even lower than the HBT2000, and that clinches it for me.

It just feels so comfortable and plays so well :D I just :love: it, I'm not saying it's the best guitar in the world 'cos it surely isn't, but it still represents staggering value for money.

I doubt I'd put my trust in it 100% if I played live/toured, but for home use or as a backup guitar, it'll do a fine job. Maybe I've been fortunate and was lucky enough to get a good'un, but whatever, I'm so satisfied I've put 3 of my other guitars up for sale. I'll never get back the extra money I spent on upgrading the pups on 2 of them, but I honestly can't see them getting much use now the J&D is here.

I'm assuming, going by the quality, that J&D (just like Cort) have been making guitars for brand names, and are now making/selling under their own name.
RIP Black Tom and Beckett. They weren't just cats, they were MY cats, the best cats ever.

I swear I will never look into threads like this one again!

Yes I meant the guitar fetish ones. I've spent about £120 on my fenix with SD pickups (which I do like a lot), and seen on harmony central that a lot of people like the guitar fetish ones. Could get a couple of humbuckers delivered for about £45. Either that or just get one seymour duncan/swineshead or similar for £45 or so. I don't really want to spend more than he price of the guitar on pickups at the moment (although I might later maybe). Those bulldog ones are getting into bareknuckle territory, I don't I want to spend that much on a single pickup. grrr, decisions decisions. :cry:

That Harley Benton amp is only a couple of weeks new I think. I am very tempted - maybe add a bright and standby switch, would be quite good for the money.

I've been in email contact with a guy that swears by the GFS pups, and from the way he describes how good they are, getting them delivered at that price is a good deal.

I may at some point replace the pups on this JD S890, assuming I can find a buyer for one or more of my 'now' spare guitars that is. I've done the usual cheapass trick of placing my ads in Loot, one issue published and a week online for free. I got my first enquiry this afternoon, it went something like "Err, hello, I'm phoning about the guitar you have advertised" "Which one" I replied, "there are three for sale" This must have confused him as he mumbled something about calling back later, and rang off. Needless to say, he hasn't called back :x

Speaking of Loot, one of the guitars for sale is a Wesley EX100s, a big bodied Gibson D series jazz guitar copy. I placed the ad, for some reason it was placed on hold while it was checked out. I got a mail from Loot earler today, telling me they don't allow ad's that advertise copies. FFS, warez I can understand, but how can anyone warez a guitar? :x :x

It does indeed look tempting :wink:

I guess they tread carefully around anything described as a 'copy'. They don't want to get accused of helping promote counterfeit jeans or something... :) Best describe it as 'similar' to the Gibson, anyone who knows their stuff will know what you mean.
but how can anyone warez a guitar?
I had an old ibanez once thats neck definitely had been cracked at some time... :D

Hi Gary,
They gave me a phone # to call to find out why my ad had been refused, but it was easier to cancel the original ad, reword and resubmit it. I haven't heard back so I guess it's okay this time.

We've all been there at some time :lol:

I ordered a couple of GFS pups today for the wesley (a dream 90 and dream 180)- even cheaper than I thought - £36 delivered. hopefully they will prove to be good value.

I decided to wait for a month to see if that amp gets reviewed/slated online and also to find out if it is a direct clone of the VJ. Also I need to starve my tight-fisted gear lust for a bit. :D

Woody guitars: read a good review of a thinline tele-like guitar a while back, now they have semi-strats and SGs on ebay... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/woodycustom-guitars

love the look of the strat.

I was sniffing around one of the woody thinlines in january, put in a sneaky £55 bid it went for £56. That review makes it look pretty good. There is definitely some value to be had with their blemished ones. That sg looks like it could be fun

Some of the Woody guitars look great, especially the hollow sg.

Anyone else noticed there's a Finish luthier who's less than impressed at 'another' Woody brand http://www.woodyguitars.com/notise_eng.htm I wish him luck in keeping his brand name, I reckon he's gonna need it.

Just an update on those GFS pickups- I can thoroughly recommend them, after a day or so playing with them -so much better than the stock ones. Balls to SD, I'm going to get more GFS ones from now on.

Nice one Hanglow, I'll be sure to consider them if/when I change the pickups on my J&D S890. Swineshead pickups aren't expensive, but the GFS ones are even cheaper.

I knew I wouldn't be able to resist for long :oops: :hihi:

I've just ordered a couple of GFS Lil Killers (6k and 10k) along with a GFS Bigmouth bridge. They recommended I use 500k pots so I'll be upgrading all the electrics on this J&D when they arrive.......I say I will, I've never done the whole lot before, so maybe I'll get it done for me. At the price I've paid for these pups, I can afford to do it that way :wink:

Good effort, I'll be interested to find out what you make of the single coil sized ones. Mine only took a week to arrive as well, and were marked as worth $9, so they weren't taxed at all, although I don't know if they would be at the full price. Even then, it would only be a fiver or so.

It's fairly easy to do all the electrics. If the wiring diagram isn't good enough for you then check out the ones on the seymour duncan site, It think GFS use the same colour co-ordination, and there are loads of different combos to choose from.
