Hey all,

I need suggestions for a good set of World/Ethnic percussion multisamples - no loops or one-shots. Got me one of those new Alesis Control Pads and I need some high-quality stuff to trigger. I've got Doru's ethnic percussion and Swarplug, but those are one-shots and I need velocity layers. BFD's percussion thingy is pretty limited - I need samples from a variety of cultures and instruments - Indian, African, Arabic, Latin, etc.

I've Googled my brains out and I mostly come up with loop sets or the World Percussion Refill, but I don't want or need Reason. I've never checked out Battery, which I've heard has some good ethnic kits. But that's a lot of money to spend for a library where I don't need 75% of the kits, since I've already got BFD. Same goes for Stormdrum - lots of industrial stuff that I'd never use.

Guidance, please?

Thanks very much.

not to be so shameless but check out my library - 'FlyingHand Percussion'
Sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

Go to the site at - www.flyinghandpercussion.com for info/demos/purchase or PM me for questions.

Take care,

Thanks so much for the reply Eitan - will check out right away.
Not shameless at all to say "hey, I may have what you need."

True strike 2 is another option. http://www.projectsam.com/libraries_ext_02.html

I would have thought the Doru percussion had different velocities, although I've heard that the samples are not organized very well.

Thanks A,

Will check it out.

check out Yellowtools Culture - for percussion it is just great. lots of multi-samples with different articulations and it also comes with MIDI loops which are quite handy from time to time.

Thanks steff3,

I did checkout YTC some while back. If I recall correctly it had lots of nice Latin and Arabic stuff, but I also need things like talking drums, tablas, bodhrans and so forth. Maybe there's just not one single sampleset that has everything I need.

Thanks again for the reply.

hello,

well talking drum and tablas are definitely there ..... When I was looking around (a few months ago) Culture was the most complete and best quality ...

I am more missing stuff like in BFD percussion - which seems to be great, but I am not a big fan of such closed architectures .....

Hey steff,

You know, now that I look at the instrument list in Culture, it does have more of a variety than I remember. Thanks for bringing it back up. For the things not in Culture, I suppose I can always make velocity layers of Doru's set.

Any ideas on the best way to do this? Pardon my ignorance, but then I am a drummer. Is it just a matter of making different volume wavs out of a single file, with something like Soundforge?

Really appreciate the replies.

Ususally the sampler allows you to assign velocity to the single-shot sample so that softer hits play the sample with a lower volume. It's not quite the same as a multi-sample, but sometimes it really doesn't matter.

When it does matter, though, Culture is a nice collection. I've had it for a long time and really enjoy it. Also, if you are looking for exotic stuff, don't forget ChineeKong. Great stuff in that collection, too.

Hey Shane,

I wonder if you can buy Battery or the RMIV without the libraries...

It does look more and more like Culture is probably my best bet as far as a variety of instruments.

Yeah, all that Kong Audio stuff is top-notch. I've got ChineeKong and the erhu and winds things as well.

Thanks.

Eitan,

I had seen your library on SONIVOX, but I didn't know you were a kvrer. The demos are great, and really show off the library. One of the things you've done is include recordings of both top and botton of Djembes and Asikos. Most librarys leave out much of the low frequency content of these instruments, which, I guess, makes them sit better in a mix. But sometimes you need the bottom.
