I Recommend FXPansion's GURU! It's Standalone and VST.
You can work with wav.files with this one.
It always worked fine for me ( Hardware synths with Soft drum )

I'm a little curious about why it has to be stand-alone. You couldn't wrap a VST in something like VSTHost or SaviHost? Would open up your possibilities and maybe save some money.....

i hear that idrum is going to run on windows quite soon, but I think you can't beat Guru for Stand Alone beatmachine. if it's hardware, get a used mpc-1000 for$500 bucks and visit me in heaven.

yeah I have ez-drummer, it's cool, but nothing like the others mentioned in this thread
that's more of an easy version of bfd, imo doesn't have the quality or articulations of bfd but it is easier. it's not a drum sampler at all
