Um... didn't Muon go to the actual source to do the reverse-engineering? Why go back to a 'best of the not quite good enough (in the minds of the purists)' and not the original?

We studied a 303 very closely. After all, there's not much point in trying to build something that sounds like one and not having one.

...as you can see, we hacked the poor thing about a bit to get signals into and out of the filter, and really examine the oscillators. Hours of fun

I wouldn't get too hung up on the 303 sequencer quite honestly. I get the vibe that most artists relying on 303s actually use a MIDI retrofit - Hardfloor are a good example (and heck, in the last few years WHO has done 303 better??)

The MIDI retrofit 303 they use works in the *same* way as Tau 2 does (overlapping notes give you glide, certain velocities give you accent).

Our take on this is that if you sat down and had a riff in your head that you wanted to play on a 303-type sound, for 99% of people the step sequencer itself would just simply get in the way of the creative process rather than enhance it. There is something to be said of the "found riff" aspect of the 303 (when you take the batteries out for an hour or so the memories fill up with junk) but there's only a handful of patterns and it can take quite a few hours of messing to get any *musical* junk. A lot of the people who make a big deal about this have simply never, ever tried it

Having said all that, we still like the idea of creating some kind of MFX step sequencer. But seeing as programs like Energy, Orion, Fruity and Project 5 do it so well already we're still not convinced in 2003 that it really is necessary except for the totally obsessional geek

Where Tau2 scores is in the *sound*. We can *show* you where we've got it closer to the 303 than anyone else so far. Watch this space.

Well,

there actually is a difference between using a 303 and programming a 303. I bet that 99% of all existing acid-house tracks beeing made between 85 and today wouldn't exist without the step sequencer. The wickiest 303 basslines were programmed by not exactly knowing how that thing (the sequencer) works. If you use a midikeyboard you rather know what you play which simply doesn't lead to that kind of stuff. I hope you slightly get what i mean (unless your definition of acid doesn't contain emmanuel top, dj misjah and other stuff like that, ykwis...)
