ok so at work (radio station)there's this guy who is my mate, but can sometimes be an obnoxious jerk, making outrageous and often uneducated claims, and when challenged, completely talks crap/lies and tries to confuse you from the point even you're certain he's wrong. (he also happens to be my boss)
today he asked me to turn off the mic preamp on a mic channel on one of our yamaha dm1000 consoles. when i asked him how to do this, he rolled his eyes and called me a dumb ass, then came in and switched the phantom power of that channel off. (we use rhodes nt2 mics so they're phantom powered)
now i was under the impression that phantom power was a separate issue from the preamp.
am i wrong?
(i know this is petty but it's constantly little things like this so i have to f**king put him in his place)

The preamp still works with the phantom power turned of.
However condenser mics will not work. But dynamic ones will. So he's not turning of the preamp by cutting the phantom power. However in this case he kinda did.
(Yes, i do know that some condensers works without phantom and some dynamics require them)

It's more like he turned off the mic really. The phantom power switch doesn't change how the preamp works at all. There are most likely mic preamps with an on/off switch, and it's no wonder you asked him how to turn the preamp off when he told you to, since it's probably not doable on that console.

+48v is not the power switch for the mic pre, it's the phantom power for condensor mics. Plug in a dynamic, have your co-worker "turn off the mic pre" and show him his ignorance.

Sadly, your mate is a plonker.
The *only* way to turn a mic-preamp off...or any other lines powered device...is to cut the mains power. When he asked you to turn the pre-amps off on the desk, you should have just smiled in a most silly way, and thrown the grid switch on the power supply.
