Hey everyone,

This is my first post ever, so let me introduce myself. 22 years old, SF & ATL based, been working on futuristic funk, experimental hip-hop, house, electro type stuff in Reason (mixed with live bass etc.). About to begin learning the NI software..been doing this stuff for a little over a year now. It's been a cool journey through sound getting my feet wet trying to learn to create the music in my mind.

Anyway, on to the topic:

The experimental hip-hop/funk fusion group SA-RA has some of the sickest sounds, in my opinion. Any tips on achieving that the fat, punchy, nasty bass-sound on tracks like 'We Gonna Do It Again'

listen

..or that rising pad in 'Glorious'? I'm more concerned about the bass sound though. Analog synths? Or is this possible in software? Saw waves + sines or squares?

Another example of this type of sound is 'Butterfly' by Jamiroquai - that's one of the phattest & funkiest synth bass sounds I've ever heard. Kinda sounds like it's layered with a clavinet using a mu-tron or something.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Peace.

you can come up with some sa-ra type basses and sounds with minimonsta !

i was also looking for this kind of sounds for a long time and found
them tweaking all the g-media synths, i dont know but with other vst's
i didnt even come close... but im not good in programming synths at all...
but with the g-media stuff i definitly get into the ballpark !
they definitly got THAT sound ...

about sa-ra, i saw them use all analog in a videotour through there studio

thanks for the info! i'll look into the vst.

i've also had some luck in reason by using the combinator + lots of subtractors stacked, panned differently, some with an increase in resonance, and using square or saw waves.
