I thought Propellerheads.se had the only written permission by Roland Music to write a software-clone with 303ish GUI ? There were clones from other programmers that had be canceled for this reason

There was a case not so long back where a guy had ripped a screenshot from the VariOS 303 GUI and used it to make his own Reaktor ensemble, now IMHO that's asking for trouble from their lawyers and we've steered well clear of that kind of thing.

We're not breaching any of Roland's copyrights or patents, nor are we trying to deceive anyone into thinking Tau2 is a Roland product.

I bet that 99% of all existing acid-house tracks beeing made between 85 and today wouldn't exist without the step sequencer

...and I have to respectfully disagree

99 % of the tracks that used the 303 step sequencer weren't only filled with a accidentally put together riff .. they were also to damn simple ........... hey lets use a 909 drumcomputer and fill it up with some swirlish 303 bleeps ... good idea - but only when step sequenced - ya know i am so uncreative i need coincidence to help me out

having said that - muon tau is the greatest baseliner in the world.

btw i do like some classic house tunes from 85 up to now
a lot of the producers i like didn`t use the 303 and a lot of the people i like did use the 303 often. often triggered via sync
most producers i knew back then used the atari st1040 with a cubase crack
so did i.

i always liked the more sophisticated sound

notice the 303 on top of the page - o.c. its a nice device but more for its hypnotising gliding sound as the step sequencer.

Well, i didn't say that the pattern were filled in a random manner, but i remember DJ Pierre saying that most guys in chicago's acid-house scene would have definitely NOT programmed stuff like that

without using the step sequencer. I've been programming enough 303 basslines to know the difference between playing a midi keyboard and using step sequencers. the results in both ways of processing notes are very different. although many basslines in acid house history were really easy, considering the notes beeing played (such as armando's track "151"), many producers from back in the days claim they wouldn't have programmed the stuff they did without the step sequencer.

Nevertheless i've got to second arguru, the 303 sequencer is indeed ugly and crappy but there is no way to neglect its influenced beeing found in acid-house history.

...and no one here is. However, you have to ask yourself how relevant it is to the way we make music with 303's *now* rather than 15 years ago.

ive got to say listening to those mp3s that if the step sequencer played a big part in producing those tracks..then please leave it off

..it may have been new and inspiring, even revolutionary bck then..but listening now these tracks just sound dull and primative...the sound of the 303 is great but needs to be taken forward away from this stoneage junk...just my opinion

i don`t like many of the listed tracks anyway

i do like the way VON MAGNET uses the 303
a song should be more as a riff in my world anyway
in the end its not the devices you use but how much creativity you got
