I have an Akai sample lib from way back when I used to have an Akai sampler.
What's the best software sample player to use them in my sequencer?

It's just that I want to throw in the odd acoustic bass, drum kit or something like that.
I has to be cheap or even better free, or perhaps there is a way I can convert it to Shortcircuit format?

Programs like Chicken Translator and FMJSoft AWave Studio should be able to convert the sample libs to any current format used today.

My MusicCalc is served over https!!

Not to forget Extreme Sample Converter (which seems to be really good) and CDxtract (which is really good).
Meanwhile, they all do AKAI conversions more or less reliably.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

well, for short circuit, you shouldn't need any converter, as it reads akai format (AKAI S5000/S6000/Z4/Z8 .akp banks):
