As part of my search for a new DAW, i downloaded the demo Podium yesterday and messed with it a while. I got to say, it is the most beautiful one i've seen so far. I WANT to like it and use because its so appealing. But i have yet to really wrap my head around the concept. Hell, i'm not that experienced with different GUIs so i guess my learning curve is gonna be steap. I'm just wondering if after all that learning, if it'll really serve me any better.......
Its kinda hard to tell right now. I've also tried Reaper and i find that to be a great one as well. I got it instantly- but its alot like PTle, as far as gui is concerned.
But i really WANT to like Podium. Isn't that strange?
It also seems the most satble of all the ones i've tried out so far. I loaded it and bang- no problems, no crashes, no freezes- nothing. I bought my comps with the specs recommended by Digidesign, and it doesnt run that smoothely for me.
I guess time will tell, she sure is pretty though.......................

Okay, so I'm going to look at this now... one question though - does Podium write a lot of stuff to the Windows registry?

This is almost exactly how I felt the first time I looked at the demo - and I registered my copy within 48 hours. It is a labor of love - I know something about those

- and Frits is an amazing developer.

I'm gonna need a good time stretch algo (a la Radius!!), some more features of the biggies before i sink all time into it. Cubaaes ability to do vocal editing and Sonars audio engine! Lol. For now, its a great seq to keep at your mates crib, when youre tired of his stories about Florida and the hottie he met there... Plus its free with CM magazine!!! Ohh so worth it!! IMHO it kicks Tuna, Reaper, Kristal, and even Tracktions ass! Nice!

Since you asked...

"Apart from the data that is stored in project files and any associated wave files, all persistent configurations made in Podium are stored in a single plain text setup file.

Podium does not store any information in the Windows registry.

Of the information stored in the setup file it is only the settings for the MIDI/Audio interfaces, the mixer engine resolution and the root VST plugin folder that may influence how project files are loaded and played back.

This makes it a simple task to copy your project folders to backup media and to port your projects to Podium installations on other PC systems."

...in an effort to try and help Frits get through to Propellerhead who clearly are not very interested in the idea of responding to Frits.

It appears Justin had a similar problem. Frits thought suppport was Propellerheads issue, maybe it's increased competition. I can't make head or tail of it either way. The Props are just not interested it appears. Baffling.

I looked up "Podium" in the registry, and there were several entries there. It didn't seem that any were essential though, but it DID write to the registry.

Seems that it should function without it though.

Lkewise - I did a quick registry search. There are entries related to Podium but (apart from the .pod file association) none of them are directly related to the operation of the program itself.

That must be the entries created by the installer, so that Windows knows how to do a clean uninstall. The Podium application does not write to the registry.

Having an icon for an unopened/uninstalled program on the desktop puts an entry into the registry. There is no escaping logs into the registry, just that Podium does not clog up the registry with junk.

Thanks Fritz! I didn't think about the uninstaller stuff.

So essentially, this could run on a zip drive, right? I haven't tried it, but since I'm updating the thread on portable audio apps, I would love to add Podium to it.

I haven't tried yet, but does Podium ONLY support ASIO? Or does it also support WDM or any other format? This can make a difference in TRUE portability, as most random computers won't have ASIO installed, and you won't always have admin rights(although when doing serious work, that's not likely).

I do have a question, if Fritz is still hanging around, or if anyone else knows.

On the plugin scan in Podium, once it reaches my Tracktion-only plugins, it gives an error, as expected. However, if I click the message to confirm, it keeps coming back. I can't get past it at all. The only way is to terminate through the task manager. So I can't get the rest of my plugins to scan in.

Is there a way to ignore a particular plugin? Or am I doing something wrong that makes this happen?

With some configuration, yes. The installer creates an "Application Data\Zynewave\Podium" folder where it places the Podium.ini setup file and a cache folder for temporary audio files. If you run Podium from a flash drive on a computer without a Podium installation, Podium will create the application data folder and put a default setup file in there. To make it work properly you would then need to select a cache folder in the Podium preferences.

does Podium ONLY support ASIO?

It also supports the good old Wave drivers, but that has horrible performance. I always recommend using the ASIO4ALL driver with sound systems that don't have a native ASIO driver.

Is it the same plugin that keeps popping up the message? I have a few demo plugins installed that pops up a demo message when scanning, but the Podium scanning continues after dismissing the dialog.

Yes, it's the RMIV Tracktion version that keeps popping up. But I do know it's the same EVERY time. I click on the "ok" and it comes right back again. It never goes away for me. So my tests with Podium have been without my plugins, and mainly with audio due to this happening.

Hi,
I down loaded this last night and played with it for an hour or so and am about to continue now.
I heard some people saying that it was a little hard to get your head around but I found that got me jamming in no time.

I did end up having one slight problem. Upon launch, it would get be loading up the plugins and then I would get the windows message. Podium needs to close for some unknown reason. It happened at the same time that the synthmaster bugme screen came up.

I have done a reinstall and all is well again.

You can tell that a lot of care has gone into this, it great. the customise project window options are cool.

hi, yes I should have said earlier, I had something similar with the synthmaster free plug. the bugme window would come up and then podium would close. No points for guessing how I fixed that.

I'm very impressed with Podium
