Mescalero bass

I really like the the big, fat distorted bass on ZZ Top's Mescalero album. Especially on the song of the same name. Anyone know how to get a similar sound? Is it the amp or the distortion?
I can't find a clip to post, but here a clip on Amazon. If you find it on iTunes it sounds a bit better. The bass comes in about halfway through.

Sounds like a fender p-bass through a ts-808, shiny new heavy gauge strings strings and hard guitar pick. Could be something different, but that's what I use when I want my bass to growl like that.

Mix in a clean direct signal in equal amounts, compress signal on the way in, and scoop mids / boost highs to taste. Ts-808 is the key!

You didn't have to go throught the trouble of recording that. But thanks a lot. I have Izotope's Trash, but never played with the multi-band distortion. I have some new ideas now.
