Hello Theoryists!

Im struggling a bit to understand what to write on my midiclips so that i can easily understand when performing later.
When for example a pattern contains 3 16th notes and and to of them is muted, has it soething to do with triplets?:)
I then often expand the length and copy/paste the patterns so i get one pattern that is 3 16th long with the first 2 muted, the next 4 16th long with the first 3 muted , the next 5 etc
I also like working like this with props matrix where i have one pattern playing an arpeggio (notes only, no gates) and then another matrix doing what I previously explained.

What should i write on my info gifs/backdrops?

All answers very appreciated!!!

PLZ upload a portion of the MIDI clip so we can see what you've got musically; the presence of the triplets, depending on their frequency, could potentially indicate 12/8 time (rather than just notating it in 4/4 with triplet 16ths). Also I'm not entirely sure I understand your post...

Are you describing something like this?:

Here I have notated it in 6/8 - 6 quavers (8th notes) per bar.
Note, the top line gives you the basic divisions; 6 quavers grouped into 2 groups of 3.
The next line replaces quavers with semiquavers (16th notes). - One quaver is equal to two semiquavers.
The final line, if I'm not mistaken, represents the rhythm you are talking about, with notes on the 3rd, 7th and 12th semiquavers. - Note the 'muted' notes, as you call them, are rests. - Your rhythm seems to work well in 6/8, as you'll notice that your second note corresponds to the 4th quaver in the bar, which is actually the start of the second beat (2 dotted-crotchets per bar).

So you see, when notated in a compound time signature like this, it doesn't necessarily indicate triplets. How exactly you notate it will depend on the rest of the part, and the other parts. (I have indicated only one example).

More information on time signatures can be found in my Introduction to Music Theory. There was also a long thread ages ago on time signatures, it can be found here if you're brave enough. There have also been several other threads on this topic, so you may want to search for them.

I suppose it's a matter of being able to recognize the accented (sometimes transparent in more, 'diverse' pieces of music) phrase that determines how many beats is measured in a song. 6/8 indeed does seem to match the rhythm in question, though it could be 3/8, 3/4, or even 4/4 using triplets.

Sorry, but I have to say I don't understand your question at all. Do you want help with notation? Rhythm in general?

Hi BosseJo!

My question is really clumsy formulated as i am really new to all music theory terminology.
Im trying to gain knowledge in rythm theory so that is easier for me to know what i should write on midi/audio clips etc.
Im really into odd beat rythmic electronic music and i think learning som theory would be helpfull.

Thanks alot!

Not to worry :)

I think this book is excellent:

The Rhythm Bible by Dan Fox.

It's for everyone regardless of level, beginners up to the most advanced levels of students and professionals. It also comes with a CD so you can hear the rhythms which is very helpful.

A good challenge for most would be learning how to improvise under 5/8, 7/4 / 7/8 or possibly 17/16 timesigs. !!!!
