Following the recent interest in my Japanese windchimes, I have re-instated some other oriental samples that you might enjoy:
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/Singing_Bowl.zip
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/Rkang_Gling.zip
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/Manjira.zip
Audio demos here:
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/bowl_demo.html
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/gling_demo.html
http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/manjira_demo.html
This is how they sound in Fusion but the downloads are non-proprietary and suitable for any sampler that can handle WAVs.
Have fun and enjoy!

from:USAGE NOTE Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Oriental—meaning "eastern"—is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.

"oriental" is only derogatory insofar as it refers to europe being in the center and is therefore considered ethnocentric. but yes, it is indeed considered derogatory these days.Lagrange wrote:Dont you think "oriental" is a bit derogatory use East Asian instead..

but you got me thinking about this. first of all, the word "oriental," from latin, refers to the east in that the east is where the sun rises. however, what's funny is that the word "asia" is from a greek word meaning essentially the same thing! so if "oriental" is derogatory because it views europe as central, why is "asia" any different? because one has a greek root and one has a latin? hmm...
further, something ironic is that the word chinese people use for their own country is made up of the characters that literally mean "country in the center." the word that japanese use for their own country means, similar to the greek and latin roots in our language, "country where the sun rises," which is to say, "eastern country" (from the point of view of china, which is where the name came from).
so if the word japanese people use for their own country and the words "oriental" and "asian" all mean essentially the same thing, and if we have china audaciously calling themselves "the country at the center," how can anyone claim anything is derogatory in any of this?
anyway, thank you to the original poster for the... um, er... you know... "those" countries.

Yes, thanks so much for the samples.
I miss Asia.
for me, a midwesterner usa typical person, oriental music and sounds comes under the meanings similar to oriental foods.
As a 'merican, oriental also holds down meanings of mysterious and exotic, as I don't get to experience Asian stuff on a daily basis.
I gotta find a new word to exchange with 'oriental'

coming from australia i've always thought of asia as starting at about china and not including india - most of my friends are the same. And I think most Australians would probably seperate south-east Asia from Asia as well. This came up after I went to England where they refer to Indians as 'Asian' which had never occurred to me as I'd always thought of Indians as 'Indians'. 'Oriental' seems a sort of British Empire / Boy's Own adventure word - okay to use but filled with nostalgia.

I do not disagree basically with those usual and irritating ethnocentric misjudgments but isn't in the case europe defined as a part of the "western world" ?
strangely the " Empire of the middle", in frensh : Empire du milieu qualifies China ...what an excentricity !!!
Quibbling rules !!!

Thanks for these. It was just yesterday I was thinking I need some sonorous, metallic sounds.
Incidentally, I don't think the terms oriental and occidental would be considered offensive when referring to art/music and concepts/ideas. The term Western is often used here, even for North America which is, of course, in the Farther East.
