New Firewire Interface

I after a new firewire interface to use with my imac.

After a bit of searching I think firewire is the best way to go as opposed to USB.

The few I have in mind at the M-Audio Firewire Solo, Edirol FA-66 and maybe the presonus firebox or the inspire.

The cheapest of the lot seems to be the m-audio and they seem to be good interfaces from what I have used before, does anyone have experience or advice they can offer?

Looks real nice a little more expensive than I wanted to spend. I have just brought a new Novation remote sl 61 so buttons are pretty sorted for me. Trying to weigh up between the fa-66 and m-audio firewire solo, not sure if the extra £80 for the fa-66.

i have one firewire solo actually, and i've never had a single problem with it, i've had it for around 18 months.

the only thing i find annoying is that it doesn't have a volume knob for the headphones, but other than that i'm satisfied with it.

Oh I didn't realise that, the firewire audiophile does doesn't it? Would that be suitable for studio project work or would the solo be a better option?

the audiophile is an internal card, no?, i don't think that it has knobs at all, and i don't see a headphone out on the pics i found, just 4 RCAs, i guess that you could use one stereo out for your monitors and one for headphones, using an adapter.

if i had to buy one on this price range again, i would probably go with this one instead->

The firewire fw410 model you are talking about seems to compare to the fa-66, can't see much difference between the 2? Both have the same quality of drivers? m-audio vs edirol?

i guess it depends on what you need, what kind of outputs and how many, i doubt that they'll sound very different from eachother.

Thats the thing, im not really after loads of inputs and outputs, really just one set of outs and maybe space for one instruments or mic i suppose.

FW is the way to go. There are few options in the USB2.0 protocol, and USB1.1 has massive latency issues that will make overdubbing almost impossible. FW has a higher sustained throughput than USB2.0, which is why it is the more popular protocol for audio interfaces.

That being said, the Firebox is a very nice device, as is the M-Audio. Either will serve your purpose well.

I have this one and it works well with my new iMac. No problems here....

Thanks for the advice everyone, I have gone with the m-audio firewire solo, seems to suit me just fine
