Hi chaps,

looking to build my little couch music studio. Intend to use a midi keyboard to control reason/ableton/cubase but also want to record guitar and vocals.
I'm worried about things such as latency. Always used to have a terrible delay in the vocals, guitar when recording. It was also complicated to feed the vocals/guitar back into my headphones when recording.

Would be great if anyone make some suggestions as to what to get or what features I should need.

I've just ordered an emu 0202 usb 2.0 http://www.emu.com got it for £89 but I don't get it till the beginning of next week :( the specs look good and you get lots of software.
You've got mic inputs and guitar/instrument ins. I'll let you know what it's like when I get it :)

this is all you'll need to get started:

If there are more people out there that know about soundcards or use theirs in a similar way would be great if you could help. If I could get a selection it'll make things easier. Willing to pay around £200 if necessary.

Thanks

Stay away from USB1.1 devices, the speed of the protocol is too slow to avoid latency. The Presonus Firebox is a decent device, with a couple ok pres, and multiple i/o. Around $300 retail, often found used on Craiglist and e-bay for $150.

If you're on a desktop a PCI card based card will yield even lower latencies. Check out the M-Audio stuff.

To avoid latency entirely, a small mixer with you ADDA inteface will do the trick. Route everything through the mixer and monitor your overdubbing tracks before the converter. Presto, no latency.

i have a ua101 usb 2 and it rocks, however there are loads of new cards out at the moment which also look great, have a look at the fireone by tascan for instance, sound card and transport contol in one, there are loads more like this coming to the market, have a good look round first.

Got my EMU 0202 the other day, simple installation, nice and easy to hook up mic and guitar, and the sound quality is excellent. I would really recommend it at £89 it's a bargain :)
It's got direct monitoring but I haven't used it yet because I don't get any latency :phones:
