That's the one I'm using (R8B Pro) but I haven't done any extensive tests or curves or charts, 8x10 photos or anything... :D

I seem to recall someone (Kingston?) saying that Audiomove was the best...?

Post

heavens to besty lets hope he confirms it!!!!

I'm paraphrasing here.

He said something along the lines that some say it may be as good, but R8Brain pro was a little better.

...maybe not worth the extra cash though.

I believe he likes it as well as or better than R8Brain, but R8Brain PRo is another story...maybe if he stops by he can say. Meanwhile here's a fun read:

TInteresting, thanks, guys. Why is r8brain so insanely good?

Before I went into this last mixing session, I upsampled the previous 96k mixdown to 192khz with Audiomove, but didn't get a chance to listen to it. I just listened to it in Wavelab against this last mix, which I exported at 44/32, and damn, I have to say that the high end was definitely smoother on the 192khz mix!! The pro-upsample people are right!

So I re-opened Cubase and I'm exporting my mix again at 96k (I don't get 192khz as an option, even if EMU supports it?), and maybe I can post something...mind you, would there be any point in posting an mp3? I guess so, if the purpose is to wind up with a better 16-bit master?

Oh, and should I upsample the final mix to 192, or should I just stay at 96k? I mean, it's a quater of a Gig!!
This sort of thing interest me quite a bit. Would anyone care to start a thread dedicated to up sampling and the results? I would but cant think of how to get the ball rolling.

Whats audimove?

Anyway.. off topic I know.

Sorry

Hey Dayl! Great idea. We should totally open a new topic. I'll start one now...

EDIT: New thread over here

Cool,
Because I got hooked on the smoother highs part and this is something that I really need
to start learning/applying.

And for something unrelated but maybe funny.

I have a track I am working on where the drums etc were in saved in one project, and the bass/melody saved in another for (no real good reason)

I rendered the wav files and imported them into SX to mix down and add extra midi parts etc.

I worked for an hour or so and it wasnt quite sounding right and I couldn't figure it out.

turns out, one project was 98BPM and the other....97.

What a difference 1 bpm makes :)

Wow! That'll do it! I thought you were gonna say the sample rate was wrong. I guess everyhing "snapped into place" after that, eh?

:D

heh, twas a blonde moment my good man.

Best not to start these things when we are feeling a little over-tired.

God, is there any other way to mix? Hey, it looks like it's time for our regular late-night ramblings! :D

Post

haha yup. but only 6pm in NZ atm but I'm usually here till late (very busy, 1 project at a time)

do you by chance mix any bands? reason I ask is because I have been offered the chance to mixdown a track for this guys band so he can see if I can 'walk the walk' so to speak.

So I will be getting the the individual tracks in the next week or so.

They have a parlament funkadelic type sound mixed with ben harper and a little pink floyd (can you imagine)

It really came about as I told him that I do all my work via PC and hes a hardware (I've got my expensive 16tracker with onboard FX)type. He doesn't want to believe that I can get a mix sounding good from a PC and that this type of thing is better for dance music.:)

......problem is.... I've never mixed a band before, so it will be very interesting.

I'm going to need some someone to bounce off and get feedback from (unless the guy chickens out)

Thsi is probably where I should really start increasing th sample rates etc.

Oh man, well, you gotta hit up the people here! You'll SMOKE the competition!

In truth, I don't mix live acts, although I'd feel pretty confident about it now, but my brother has about 10 yrs experience at a big studio in Ontario, so what I don't know, I get from him. I'd be thrilled to help out anyway I can, but make sure you get some advice from some of the studio cats here. I also got some killer threads archived that can save your mix about 99% of the time, so... 8)

2 files.

A 3-part chord played in a sampler. The root note is way below and only a single saw sample has been used, so the sampler has got to do a lot of pitching itself. As a result, you hear massive aliasing.
http://home.arcor.de/s.franck/EatShitMrShy/96.mp3
Exactly the same chord, same sampler patch, just the host samplerate upped to 96kHz. After bouncing it down, I converted the file to 44.1 using Audiomove (but if anybody still doesn't believe what's being discussed here, I will gladly post the raw files as well).

Yes, I used the EXS sampler, which is famous for its aliasing, but what the heck - this is happening with a lot of other samplers, instruments and plugins as well.
And, in addition, this is just ONE single chord. Imagine how things could add up in a crowded mix!

Mr. Shy, I do now EXPECT A f**king APOLOGY!!!
