I have just tried this in Cubase LE - Import the midi file. As you say, it ends up on one track, but go to the MIDI menu at the top of the screen. There is an option to "disolve midi" which allows you to seperate the tracks. I hope it works for you.

Cheers,

Pat
Thanks, that worked like a treat and the song suddenly starts to make sens :)

Funny, i already had cut a few things and made a rough draft yesterday. Then today i decided to test Poly-Ana synth demo and it fit into the song like a glove, now i have to buy the damn thing. :dog:

Hello Scoops, great master of rules, what about the use of arpeggiators, step sequencers etc.? They are - in a way - not far from changing notes (even in pitch, in case of the arp), which will, as I've heard, at the very least be frowned upon...

Best regards, and if you like, I will think of further rule questions to discuss :) , V.

Just a quick question, just to make sure before i spend any more time on what i've got already, can i add something that is not in the midi, like a filter sweep, sound FX or drumloops? The main element of what i've got now is all from the midi's, just want to know if i can use some of my own stuff as filler material.

I believe Scoops said that the basis of the composition must be from the MIDI files. I can tell you that the two entries so far certainly added things. I know I am. I will leave it to Scoops to clarify but I believe you can add whatever you like.

Scoops wrote:OK,

I know there are going to be some questions, so I thought i'd post a little FAQ to start things off

Q: Do I have to use all the tracks in the midi file provided?
A: No. You could use even just one track. However, I would suggest that you use the track that's most representative of the midi file
provided. Like the keyboards, or the melody line, if there's one there.

Q: Hey, That's my midi file posted. Can I use it?
A: Yes, that's the prize for winning the first phase of the contest

Q: Can I edit various items in the midi, like velocity?
A: Yes. You may also use any other control agents on the midi file to get you to where you want to go.

Q: Can I clip down the midi file and loop it?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I change any of the notes
A: Yes and no. Changing the key for a section, or changing the key to match your voice is ok. Changing individual notes will be frowned
upon, and could be subject to review, and possible DQ

Q: Can I add some of my own tracks to enhance my comp?
A: Yes. You can add to it as you see fit.

Q: I was thinkin of doin a piece based on thematic development. Can I invert and mirror the midi file.
A: You bet! Make sure the original form of the file is well presented though.

Q: Can I change the meter and or bpm of the midi
A: Yes you may

Ohhhhh, now there's one I didnt think of. Hmmmm...
Dunno yet. It's close. Well, now that I think about it.... If I allow the mirroring and invertion, I guess I have to allow arpegiators.

Official Edict: Arpegiators are allowed

For those that were having trouble importing File #4 into FL Studio, I just discovered this by fooling around:

When the 'Import MIDI' dialogue comes up, UNcheck 'Create one channel per track'. You then get all 16 MIDI clips as separate tracks (ie. not jumbled together). Easier and faster than importing them one at a time (which is what I had been doing before I stumbled on this).

Hope that helps.
