Why wont Muon Tau Install?

I browse around here pretty regularly but,due to the bullet-proof nature of my DAW,and the VST Format in general,I almost never need to post here....Till now

Muon's free Tau and M-Drive caught my eye the other night whilst surfing through a plugin database and,even though I'd heard of Tau a million times...this was the 1st time I'd really gone and "checked it out" up close.

To cut a long story short...I really liked the idea of this plug(s) so i made a beeline straight to their site and downloaded the 3.9 Mb zip file.

I un-zipped it to a folder on my second HD and then clicked the Setup.exe file.I got the license agreement(all good so far)........BUT!....i then get the page that brings up the seperate componants for install(ie DXi demo,VSTi demo,VSTi Free.....i think that was it )but the size for the files THAT ARE TO BE INSTALLED all read 0kb.It is therefore not surprising that when i select one of these 3 items from the menu and hit "next" i get an error message saying "there was nothing to install"......and then aborts

I would seriously LOVE to try these two plugs,but i am obviously doing something wrong with the installation.(The tried and true method of downloading a single zip or sit containing a single folder with a single dll and a txt readme and maybe some fxb/fxp files just cant be beaten IMHO,but i appreciate your reasons for bundling demo's with your freeware)

I dont have Acrobat.....so i cant read the readme.pdf that is in the muon collection folder.

BTW, u sure u downloaded the right file? i dont think Tau/Drive is anything like that size

Muon now bundle a few demos in with the Tau and m-drive.This bloats a simple dll download into a a couple of un-necessary steps. This kinda sucks but its their freeware so who am i too complain?

However...We (I) dont need installers.I am perfectly capable of placing the dll in the vstplugins folder.

Ok....I will try it one more time.....download the zip...extract it.....click the Setup.exe.....get the Installation menu.......all the installations read 0Kb ..Select "VST free".....Click "next"......get a message saying "there was nothing to install"......installation aborts (doh!)

I mean......WTF?
Why on earth doesn't it just install?
Why does the installation menu read 0Kb for all the items in the menu?
(To be honest,I had a peek in the the 3 cab type folders that reside in the unzipped muon collection folder,looking for the dll files.All 3 of these folders contain nothing,not one byte)
Is this right?
Or is this the reason that they fail to load into the installation menu?

I know It's only a freebie......so i am not too fussed......but i really wanna try this sucker out.

There are other free synth bassline VSTi out there.....but i would prefer muons one because this gets the most thumbs up from all the reviews ive read(for freebies anyway)...and also.....the Tau has a pro version for sale so if i really start getting deep with it i can expand to a degree.

The moral of this story is:

Please read the installation instructions

It's all explained, and there's even nice pictures. Select the components you want to install, leave the components you don't want. The only tricky issue is, for some reason, Installshield doesn't display the little check boxes that indicate where you are supposed to click. It's a complete mystery to us, and we're going to rip the demo into seperate VSTi and DXi installers to stop people from being confused.

The reason why there has to be an automatic installer is really just for the DXi version. Stuff has to be "registered" onto your system. The other advantage is that if we put an icon for the manual into your start menu, someone might actually read it

...and as for rolling all the downloads into one file, well, if you look at our website statistics it seems that around 3000-4000 people come to the site every month, download Tau and never even so much as read the other pages. It is very difficult to analyse if they ever come back and actually buy something either.

Believe me, if we sold as many Tau Pro's as we have distributed free Taus I'd be mailing you from my yacht So the only hope of getting your attention for long enough to even look at the commercial stuff is to bundle it with the free stuff that everyone is coming to the site to download.

Having said that, I'm not even sure we can continue doing business this way - I even think maybe free VSTi's have had their day. Once upon a time, it was important to get people to come to the site and so offering something for nothing was a good way in the early days to attract business. Especially since the competitive landscape at the time was so sparse. These days now, there's some much free stuff that you could download a new synth every day for a year. Some are complex and brilliant, a lot are really quite lame and not worth the bandwidth.

The reality for the developer of a free synth is that once they start to question just how much time they've spent on coding their VST instruments and the likely future reward, a lot of projects get abandoned. Even if you're just doing it for the love, it can hurt when you see thousands of downloads and no feedback or emails AT ALL. I've heard this from a multitude of talented developers here on these boards.

As a company, Muon cannot afford to give the new stuff away that we've spent months in R&D on - thanks to deals like ours with Computer Music, we can still deliver a top-quality free product to everyone and still get paid...and then, thanks to the R&D we can go off and create new products like Tachyon and Neutron, and the forthcoming updates to all of our older products too that will blow your socks off. When the free Tau and Atom are finally deleted from the catalogue in a few months we hope you won't miss them

You fools!!!! The answer is simpler than you think. Tau won't install on that PC because IT KNOWS THAT IT ISN'T A REAL 303 AND FEELS GUILTY ABOUT IT!!! Disconnect you PC from the Internet IMMEDIATELY so that it won't read the 303 threads on KvR and then, after the computer has forgot about them [give it a couple of days], it'll install perfectly.

Yeah.....I understand all the reasons you stated.....and they are very valid.(esp. the part on free plugs)

It's just that you want a plug to install....it doesn't..you then get frustrated and start firing off unwarranted barbs............I apologize

Ive got Tau firing now.....and its great (TB-303 or not,it sounds NIIICE and the tau pro can only sound better)

Completely off topic, are you sure you have a 1.6Ghz P3? The highest P3's got were 1.2's, and that was a newer batch.
