Well I would cross them off my list if that was the case. It would be a tough decision deciding who to go with for mastering.
I have to admit, I think I would take a real stab myself. Maybe give a company one track and see if they can do better.

I would never try to master it myself; that's a mastering rule for a reason. You need fresh, unbiased ears to get a good master, not the guy who's still pissed off that that bend in the third verse didn't have as much delay on it as you envisioned...you get my drift. But yeah, totally, the idea is to submit a song to the ME so you know what you're getting.
The thing I don't quite get about submitting one track is that mastering is also about matching EQ and levels between all your tracks; sure, they can make one track sound good - but do you know if they can match all the songs perfectly? Or is that not as big a concern as I'm making it? (I pose the questions to the KVR wind...)

I would master with a friend, a friend who was extremely picky about sound, and with ears of gold.
I'm lucky, I have a friend like that, but man I've been tempted so many times to have stuff pro mastered. I mean c'mon..how many albums do we make in a life time.
Better make it as good as you can.
but who to choose? Will they do a good job?
