The "essence" is usually a combination of some signature sounds along with some raw waves to be able to subtractive synthesis with and perhaps some cool textures that have the subtle nuances of the machine in it... like the sound of its filters or slew of it's modulation... the character elements that capture something unique and special. But at the end of the day, something that is still musically useful and gives you a broadened esoteric virtual collection (museum almost) to choose from.

This might be a dumb question, but will the sounds of this thing have the high dynamics of a real analog synth? Like when I play a note at a low velocity it sounds one way and as you increase velocity the sound opens up or whatever. I don't know the technical way to describe it. I have USB's Synths Anthology and it lacks any of that. It is just a static snapshot of an analog sound...no dynamics.

Well, actually, none of the Moog (or most analog synths) had velocity sensitivity to get those dynamics. But, since SampleMoog is half SampleTank then YES this is entirely possible and I am sure there will be some patches in it that do this with amp and filter responding to velocity to get this dynamic effect you are talking about, Pete.

Oh ok I have never played a real moog. I have just heard this on some VAs and I love how it impacts the dynamics. I guess I would not expect it to be there if it is not in the original sound. Thanks for the reply.

The first synth I ever owned was a Radio Shack Moog. The guy told me it was a synthesizer and that meant it could "synthesize" any sound imaginable. ;) Haha.

yeh . .. but you still bought it. :P

On reflection, I'm sure your didn't learn your excellent sales and marketing skills from him.

I set the sights a little lower than that. But at that time everyone was marketing synths as "any sound in your imagination". This guy even had some examples. He said "Look if you want to make it bark like a dog you can do it. How about a siren? Check this out" and then played a siren. "See? Any sound you can think of".

Actually I bought it at the Sears Mall. I had never been to a proper music store. I was 12 years old and wanted to play keyboards in a band. This one was too small though so I went to a store called Ace Music finally and I was like a kid in a candy store. All of these analog keyboards - Prophet 5s, Jupiter 8s, CP70's... I ended up buying a Yamaha SK30 which was like their version of an Arp Quadra. This was before midi. But, it didn't sound like the Moog either and I knew that even back then. So it was tough. What I didn't know is that I really needed a MINIMOOG, a Prophet 5 and an Arp, CP70... but I couldn't afford it anyway. Each one was thousands of dollars.

So, actually, for anyone who always wanted every Moog synth this new plug-in should satisfy that virtual reality a little bit... each one had a different sound that was nice to have from the Polymoog's Vox Humana to the Memory Moog's PW pads to all of the various monophonic Moog basses and leads... all under one roof for the price of LESS than that old Radio Shack Moog (which I think was $500.). Just being Realistic. ;)
