Some pictures and impressions from Musikmesse 2007. Enjoy.

So, how big is Musikmesse? Big. More than 1,600 exhibitors, more than 30,000 instruments, more than 100.000 visiors on one single day. But these are just numbers. I got a better sense of the scale of the event when at some point I was wondering where Yamaha's presence was. Until I realised that they had one entire hall on their own:

Note: some of the +10 halls are sized like aircraft hangers, so, yes, Musikmesse is really big!

Some people might say: well, my ROMpler/Sampler also offers thousands of instruments, so what the heck? Well, just have a look at this picture which shows approx 50 of the 30,000 instruments displayed at Musikmesse:

Still think this just looks like one VSL patch? OK, have a look at this tiny snapshot of Hall 1 then. There were literally hundreds of Grand Pianos in this hall, and most of them were played at the same time. Sonicwise this was like being in the middle of an orchestral battlefield!

So, is Musikmesse mainly about established business? No, fortunately not. You get to see everything: handcraft, traditional family business with a +200 years company history, you have the big players, the classics, the challengers and you have as well highly innovative ventures in all musical areas. Of course, this also accounts for virtual instruments.

JUMANJI TIME!

But also beware this animal:

Predator - as the name suggests - is after prey in the Dance/Club jungle.

Yet another Hidden...

Apart from the ongoing digital vs analog saga, there certainly was one dominating theme in Hall 5.1:

Guitars, another big theme! There was an entire hall dedicated to the Fenders and Marshalls, Oranges, Laneys etc of this world. It was loud in Hall 4. But soundwise the virtual folks in Hall 5.1 weren't far behind. Here you can see IK Multimedia, with a demo of Amplitube Hendrix edition:

The performance and sound was really amazing! For A2 owners, however, it is a pitty that Ik seemingly will release this as quasi new product. Hence, it's no surprise, that NI claims that with GuitarRig2 you can create Hendrix sound - without the need of buying an additional software package!

The really good thing about Musikmesse: almost all instruments are ready to be played, so if for example you are after organs or EPs you can play everything from full scale church organs (yep) to absolute classics (Rhodes, Hammond) or you could try this new baby:

There were also live gigs galore, ranging from Jazz, Music4Kids, drummer contests, big bands to Swedish Rock (The Greed). Unfortunately I missed Thund her Struck, a band which was announced as >an all-girl, American, AC/DC tribute band<. Well...

Anyway, it was worth going! I will be back.

The nord organ looks awsome...might grab me one of those sometime :).

Yeah, we've literally had Zebras running on Tiger replacing Dinosaurs, with Leopard coming up on the horizon :hihi:

Was it really needed to start another thread for that, if all could have been posted in ONE with the same coverage?

Just curious.

Imho the good news are all that new analog hardware synths with really affordable price. tiefenrausch for 698 euro or... technosaurus micron 2... MFB synths and drumcomputer. ZEBRA could not replace none of these for sure !!! save your zebra label for some hardware VA... :D

I liked his one better.
It hasn't devolved into name calling. Yet.

Hehehe, have you actually attended one of the presentations on our booth? AFAIK it was the first time a VA maker dared to do a/b comparisons with a real analogue (Moog Little Phatty) - Ken Macbeth was pretty excited, and so were a few other people who *know* analogue... just the people from Moog didn't look too happy... I'll eventually post audio files soon...

can't really agree ... zebra is very close to a lot of analog hardware from what i've heard when playing it ... the xml filter is pretty much beating a lot of hardware, not to speak of the osc's ... imo ...
also:
_no_ analog hardware ever gives you the possibilities that zebra gives you ...

And don't forget of course, that Zebra is *much more* than *just* a synth capable of those classic analog synth patches...

Urs...I really hope you win your a/b comparison... but remember that the comparison is not between two sustained "C2". To put it simply I found THE difference on playing for example a solo... among comparing the wave shape on a oscilloscope.
I have done this for hours with minimonsta and a Voyager. One osc to one osc sound the same (well...ok not really... ok let's say "close")... switch on two oscs, tweak a filter and try playing a lead solo and I feel the difference... so... try playing the same solo with some pitch and mod wheels touch here and there... some portamento... on the analog (Voyager, Evolver, Andromeda, MS-20) and with Zebra... and put up some sample. I'm really curious to listen ! Simple sounds not workstation alike... Sounds where you hear the oscs and filters... no FX at all... pure...

Oh Little Phatty is NOT sounding like a MINIMOOG AT ALL!!! Nor the voyager... but that Little Phatty... please stay away from it... don't compare zebra with it... an Evolver a/b comparison could be interesting... (because I'm looking for an evolver... cmon let me replace my choice with zebra !!!) :D

check out the "pressure" of a SH101, or MS20 ... :D

still have my mc202 (same soundengine as the 101), sold my ms20, too fragile, always broke something ... anyhow, you can achieve similar results with zebra i think ... but that's not the point at all:
zebra is zebra. dot.
it's unique, and therefore cannot be replaced in any way, that makes it so interresting ...

I'm not saying zebra is not a good choice... my point is on that REPLACED BY...
absynth or reaktor, are unreplaceable too... I'm not against VST at all... Imho there are sounds you need vst and sounds you need real hw... that's all... I have some of both world and I'm happy. Zebra can do a lot of things, a lot more than a classic analog synth... for sure but I think that "Replaced by" is only a funny and good marketing idea. If Alesis/Numark had some similar marketing strategies... their A6 would sell like hell (a 16 voice true analog with the same price of a virus ti)...

Just curious.
Because, when someone opens this thread, they immediately get to see FrankT's Musikmesse overview instead of having it disappear in a random page of another thread.
