Sample preview when organising samples in to folders

Hi Guys,

I am not sure if I am asking for something that exists or not.

I am organising the 1000's (prob more than I need) drum one shots in to their respective folders
i.e. Kick,snare,hats etc.

Many of the samples (any there are many) do not specify which is which. I would like if possible to find an app that allows me to preview the samples before dragging into the appropriate folder.

Double clicking each one to identify is very time consuming and I'm not going to bother.

I am about to try and see if soundforge will help me but I doubt that it will do exactly what I am seaching for.

As usual, any help on the matter is much appreciated.

Cheers

i had to do the same thing a few years ago and I think what I ended up using (if I remember right) was "loophorse". See the software tab at http://www.loophorse.com/

:o .....thats perfect! thanks mate!

Ok..loophorse keeps crashing my pc.

Loophorse mini looked perfect apart from the factthat it only copied when I dragged and dropped.

Any others out there?

The guy that made loophorse can be the only guy out there :(

Soo much crap on the market, I am still yet to find one that previews and then organises samples. :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum:

weird... don't remember ever having a crash when I used it. Tomorrow sometime I'll go look at what version I have installed (it's on another machine).

Hey Dayl! Did you try SampleCatalog? I found LoopHorse to be kind of weird, myself. I use SampleCatalog a little bit, not sure if it's what you're looing for; but I think the ultimate Windows sample preview/cataloger is still to be made, tell you the truth. Something like Audiofinder (Mac only).

I use the Total Commander file browser, which has a fast built-in audio and video preview. There are numerous functions like shortcuts for favorite folders, all sort of context display plugins for showing audio file metadata, color coding, filters... the list goes on.

Total Commander can also preview compressed audio formats like the lossless WavPack format. WavPack will compress audio files down to about 50%. Since I only have 120GB on my laptop, I convert all of my audio samples to Wavpack format in order to save space. There is a free Total Commander plugin, called Audioconverter, that allows you to do this directly from within the browser. I have my WavPack files associated with waveunpack.exe, so that when ever I find a file I like, I just double click it in order to unpack it. This is however becoming less of an issue for me, since I am in the process of switching over to Reaper as my main host, and Reaper can play WavPack files directly.

On a similar note, I have converted all of my sampler libraries into Reason NNXT Refills, which also compresses the audio down to about 50%. I have made NNXT my main sampler, and pretty much just use Reason almost like a VSTi.

This has allowed me to get 100GB of audio data onto my laptop, while only using up 50GB of the hard drive. Total Commander is invaluable in managing all this data. I am totally lost without it. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone in need of a serious file management tool.

Don't be thrown off by the initial interface, like Reaper, it is highly configurable. And just like Reaper, it is more about being functional and not about being pretty.

I was just going to say, "too bad it's so U-G-L-Y!!!", but you pointed that out. I've messed around with Free Commander, which I love for the dual-windows action, but I hate the way you can't type a path into the address bar. That slows me down, not speeds me up, and I seem to recall Total Commander behaves the same. But that's some pretty powerful stuff, to handle those compressed formats natively...might have to try it out again...

You really have to stick with it and customize it to your own specific needs. It takes a while, but will be well worth the time investment it in the long run.

There is a very active and helpful forum at...

http://www.ghisler.ch/board/

And loads of (mostly) free plugins at...

http://www.totalcmd.net/

Audioconverter and be found here...

Theres also a cool free CD/DVD burner plugin...

http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/tcburner.html

And tons of "content" plugins, many that display audio metadata and tags in the the browser's customizable columns.

Like I said, HIGHLY recommended!

gonna check out that total commander, anyways how about itunes, its free easy to audition samples , drag and drop to applications at least mine (ableton Live) easy to type in keywords to filter by. you can listen to the samples and type kick on all the kicks then drag all the kicks to what ever folder you want

:tu: Looks like the one mate. still more options than I need but looks as though it will do the job nicely.

@ Bernard.

As excellent as total commander seems, its just way more than I need.

In fact, sample horse mini was ok as I could hear the samples then drag, but it didnt seem to work.

Such a time consuming process. More so when the samples are labled

01tm456
01tm457

now one is a kick and the other is a snare :dog:

Thanks Plenty Guys. I'll see how I get on tomorrow.

AuditionIt! Never heard of! Will try!

Dayl, glad you liked SampleCatalog. Actually, I noticed last night that you can tag sounds with genre/instrument; so you could lablel 01tm456 = Kick, 01tm457 = Snare, and search with those criteria. I think. I just discovered this last night.

Bernard, I'll definitely dig into FC when I get some downtime at work, looks like one of those things that could revolutionize your workflow.
