i'm playing a marshall valvestate8080 and used to use a korg ax1000g which is horrible. currently i play a boss gt 5 and it's not too bad in combination with my amp. as the gt5 is only borrowed, i'm thinking about getting a new multifx.
the options are:

boss gt 8
line6 livepod
vox tonelab se/le

i'm not so much interested in amp sims and such as i want to play via my marshall. at home i use vsts...so please no comments like "get guitar rig or amplitube". if people can comment on the effect quality of any of these devices and on as how far they "work" with real amps it would be much appreciated. suggestions on alternatives are welcome to.

What effects are you mostly interested in?

The last multi-effect I've used was the Boss ME-10. It's collecting dust since I went back to an extremely simple setup with hand-picked effects: a Tech-21 Tri-OD overdrive and Boss BF-2 flanger.

I now have a far better signal quality, and really don't miss having stored presets that much. Presets killed my creativity. I'd use eight presets that I made in the first month I got it. Now I'm back to knob-twisting and occasional tap-dancing ofcourse, but the range of sounds I use is broader.

Do you use the effects in the FX loop of your amp, or is the chain like guitar -> effects -> amp, or maybe both? It makes a difference weather effects are put before or after the first gain stage of your amp.

I found this thread after searching and I have a questions:

I'm thinking of getting one of those Tube MP's to warm up my signal...but should it go before or after my stomp boxes....logic says it should go after because it's trying to simulate an amp, which would be last in the chain. But I have one of those digitech multifx boxes and they have an amp modeler before effects in the chain, I'm assuming to similate the process of recording direct and adding rack effects and whatnot after the fact.

Does anyone have a preferred method of where the preamp goes in the chain?

Most amps have an effect loop inbetween the preamp stage and the final power amp stage. That's where the standard order comes from. Some amps however don't have an effect loop, and I've wished they did in the past!

But you're free to experiment with the order, and come up with weird combinations: first flanger, then overdrive (from the preamp) followed by reverb / echo. Or the reversed order. It will sound different, so it's a matter of personal taste. Totally up to you ;-)

For multi-effects, I've got a Digitech RP350, not a bad unit. Ampsims are pretty good (still tweaking to find that sweet spot that I've found on the POD XT), but it's got the Digitech Whammy pedal built in, which is the same price as the RP350. :)

I got a question about the whammy pedal...but first you have to understand that I only know two people who own one...I'm sure many more here do but the subject doesn't come up often...my half brother has two (that alone is good reason to dislike it :hihi: ) the other is a guitarist with the biggest ego I've seen (gee sounds like my half brother again  ) and EVERYTHING he says is biased and as a result worthless.

But now I can ask someone I respect...isn't this thing a one trick pony? What is the mass appeal for this thing...too me it's very unnatural...what am I missing here?
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
