I was not lucky enough to have a Commodore 64 growing up, but I did have one of these. I have considered getting a C64 and trying to turn it into a synth. I saw a picture of an Atari 65XE in Computer Music recently. Anyone know if there are any simple music making solutions for this computer.

This is what I was thinking of getting.

But since I have the Atari already, I was wondering what might be out there.

Ehm... what are you typing on right now? It's got much more & evolved music making potential than the ancient eight-bitter on that picture ;-) Even with something like BUZZ on a 486 you could make more interesting tunes :hihi:

It's successor, the 16bits 520ST and 1040ST did have midi ports to control REAL synths, spawning the popularity of programs like Steinberg's CuBase.

I know, but I a have always liked the C64 sound. I have seen some fun looking projects made from them.

The C64 has a different soundchip though, the C64 had the SID, the Ataris had the POKEY, which is quite different (both are nice).

I have a couple of C64's, but I'm holding out for the MIDIBox 2.0:

I know, not a real answer to your question... Maybe you can try the SAP Maker on your Atari, found under tools at http://asma.atari.org/

I am a big QuadraSID fan, but I am always looking for other 8 bit sounding VSTs.

The MIDIBox link is exactly what I would like to do. But it looks like there are more C64 fans than POKEY.

Tim Conrardy's the man to ask around here, here's a regular and a total Atari freak. No idea if your particular model can do fun stuff, but here's his website: http://tamw.atari-users.net/

SID is much more sophisticated than Pokey but I had been liking the sound of the latter better. :)

There are some Atari demos which are playing 4 channel sample based tunes on 1.7MHz 8bit cpu...

nice trip down memory lane. My first music computer was an Atari 130 XE running a Hybrid Arts sequencer. I then graduated to an Atari 1040 ST running Hybrid Arts SMPTE Track.

I was just as amazed at what it could do then, as I am today, but I wouldn't want to go back to that...

scrap that, get an atari falcon it has 16but onboard audio, you should able to find plenty of software fot it.
