I've been searching for some decent middle eastern vocal samples...female....the kind you hear in TV documentaries about the history of jesus, Egypt, and that kind of stuff. The solemn, ethereal wailing type vocals. There are some decent ones I've heard on a demo for Zero G's "Deepest India." I know there are a few on Spectrasonics' "Vocal Planet"...but I don't want to shell out all that dough for a multi CD set when I only need one style of voices. I'm sure EastWest's upcoming "Voices of Passion" would definitely fit the bill...however, that Pace iLok crap totally turned me away from them. Does anyone know of any other decent sources for these type of vocal samples?

There are none I'm afraid.
There might be a few samples included on various ethnic sample CD's but no dedicated sample CD's apart from what you mentioned already.

I found a few vocal samples on MI7 available for download on a per sample basis but there's only a few from Middle east.
Voices of passion are by far the best option I think but if iLok turns you off I think you're out of luck.

Can you explain to me exactly what you are after, and even an audio example? Is it just 'wailing type' vocals, or actual words/phrases?

I ask because I may have the opportunity to work with an Arabic vocalist in the near future - I already have someone who has been suggested to me to work with on a vocal sample set - in fact the only thing that has been stopping me is not being sure of what people would want from such a set, and how much interest there could be.

So, I am all ears for any suggestions you may have for what you would want from this.

Yeah, I kinda figured as much. I didn't mind the old Eastwest libraries being in the Native Instruments players...like the original Stormdrum which I have, for example. But these new "Play" systems with their damn dongle are a bad move in my opinion. I also think that 8 GB is a bit too huge for a vocal-only library.

Wow pw...now this would be cool, definitley. I wasn't so much in search of actual phrases....more so melodic vocalizations in middle eastern tradition. "Atmospheric" sounding, so to speak....perhaps laments of sort. I'll see if i can find any examples and post a link here.

ok, so you are more interested in the sound and atmosphere of the phrase - maybe like the way Dead Can Dance sometimes used melodies. Maybe, a set of improvisations around a 'melancholic' theme, using Arabic scales and phrase patterns, but not necessarily with words?

Ah, yes...exactly. Dead Can Dance was a good reference. You hit the nail on the head with "a 'melancholic' theme, using Arabic scales and phrase patterns, but not necessarily with words." Often like you hear on certain movies and documentaries, where you here a thick, low string drone and perhaps some percussion with vocalizations as you described them floating above it all.

yeah i'm often looking for samples that are lyric-free. one of the big reasons is the lyrics add another stamp of authenticity that just isn't yours to claim. the other reason is that if you dont understand the language, and the lyrics say something offensive you'll have a hard time finding that out before listeners hear it.

I know exactly what you mean - I personally wouldn't use lyrics I don't understand in my own music - that in part comes from my own musical interests, and in part from my anthropological approach.

Anyway, I will think some more about such a project, and consider if it is worthwhile.

I have guzin, bought during a sale, and also her brother gediz (or similar) which i got for free during a christmas giveaway (i think)
I found them pretty useless, dont' know why... but i was never able to match them with some actual music or use the phrase in a song.
